While cleaning out a family members place that had just passed away we found an assortment of firearms. One of them was a S&W .357 with what I belive is a 3 1/2 in barrel. I will attach some picture but for the life of me I couldent find the model number stamp. After doing some comparison I have come to the conclusion that it is a model 27. Since it is missing the model number stamp does this mean it is a pre model 27? If not what model would y'all guess and maybe how much it might be worth.

So how much might it be worth. I found another one that was asking $1999.00 this one just needs a little cleaning so would $1700.00+ be reasonable?

Sorry about the passing of your family member - nice find too.

Yes, a Pre Md 27 (1950-1957) is a very nice find and quite desirable with the 3.5 inch barrel. Regarding value, the gun's condition is a primary factor. It's a little hard to tell from your pics but it appears your revolver shows some good honest wear and if this is the case, $1800 would be quite a bit more than I would be willing to pay. Maybe if you could post some more pics someone will be along to give you a better valuation than I have.

It sure is, the checkering on the Top Strap is the giveaway.

Nice find, sorry about your family member.

Will you get to keep that one?

Its worth some cash.

Sorry for your loss.

You would help the process if you add the serial number which is on the bottom of the grip.

This is important, to not throw away any boxes no matter what shape they may be in. Also save any paperwork and even receipts. Buyers love seeing where guns were purchased and how little they cost. Also of great value are specialty little screw drivers for adjusting the sights. Some sell for $150.00 So save all those things. Even gun parts have value.

I don't know how common or uncommon the 3.5" barrel is, but I'm thinking that will be the main factor in determining it's value above other similar guns. I would never give $1700 for that gun based on any other criteria. The barrel length is the unknown for me. My gunshop friend has an extremely nice and original Highway Patrolman and an even nicer Heavy Duty from the late '30's, and he's valued those two N frames way below $1700. Ho0pefully a more informed opinion will come along. Best wishes.

I think you could easily get $1700-1800 on GB. Clean it up, take some good photos and you could get more. I'm not saying it's worth that much outright, but the way things have been in the last six months on the gun auction site, seems like a pretty safe bet.

The condition is not there for it to bring $1,700+ IMHO. Maybe one of the "cream puff" sellers on GB could get that kind of money but that doesn't mean its worth it.

You should probably keep it anyway. what would you do with the $1,700 anway? Would it last very long? Think of it like a small investmest account......Hold onto it, you have $0.00 into it and it will only go up in value.

I don't plan on selling, but I would like an estimate so i won't get in as much trouble for keeping it. It does need to be cleaned. Has a few nicks but over all in good. So a best guess would do.

That pic shows some really bad wear around the trigger guard and behind, probably some freckling. That's not going to be cleaned off.

And he can't wait to sell it.

All you guys saving guns for your heirs should pay attention to this.

True....and who knows his situation? With 3 posts hes new....maybe not a gun guy.....maybe the family needs the $ to make ends meet....or pay the funeral costs....after my wife died and I saw the real sides of "family" on both sides I decided to give what I wanted to who I wanted before I kicked! And guess what one friend/like a son has been given guns that he uses and treasures....when it comes to $$$...........all bets are off......

Tell her its worth over $1000 and extremely rare, that should help soften the
grief you're gonna get for not selling it.

Long story but I have to pay $500 to keep it so I just want to make sure if I have to turn around and sell it tomorrow I won't be in the hole for more than it's worth.

It will be the best $500 you ever spend.

It s a $1000 gun, easy.

You could not get anything near the quality of that gun for $500.00.

Don't hesitate, don't look back.

That is one of the most desired barrel lengths for an N Frame.
