If you live long enough inflation will eventually take care of all bad gun deals

S&W 38,

First off, welcome to the forum. You'll find a bunch of interesting stuff here.

Secondly, I have to agree with the others. I think you paid too much by a couple hundred. Do you have this gun in your hands? These photos appear to be very poor quality auction site photos. If so, you were taking a BIG chance.

However, no matter what anyone else says if you wanted it, who cares what you paid. Just shoot the tar out of it!

S & W 38 welcome to the forum.

I won't pile on you most of the guys here are pretty nice for "gun nuts"

Price seems a little high, don't know if the weapon has any history that increased the cost. Its yours now so just enjoy. Happy shhoting

Don't think there will ever be much collector interest in that particular revolver so let's get on to the important stuff.

How does it shoot?

well you did paid a bit much for it.but you did get a great gun. the model 15 was not called the combat masterpiece for nothing.keep it dont fret over it and enjoy it.just be carefull next time.also look for a N stamped on the gun.it maybe under the barrel above the ejector rod or on the cylinder back.i have seen it in these two places.if it has that it is factory nickel.

You will spend more money feeding it than you paid. That gun will last your lifetime and beyond. Your children and grandchildren will enjoy shooting it.

I think many folks do not do their homework before hand and pay a tad too much for something. If you read this forum regularly you will get a great education free of charge and have a better handle on what the going prices are the next time you see something you want. Shoot it and enjoy it.

After the purchase is NEVER the best time to ask for advice. Zebulon

FWIW
Here's a factory nickel Pre-15

Shipped October 1955. The gun is a lot better in real life than it photographs.

I'll bet that virtually everyone on this forum has paid too much for a gun at one time or another. We all get the "I gotta have its" occasionally. What a gun is worth is subjective. If YOU like it and are comfortable with the price you paid then you didn't get ripped off. Also, frankly, the difference between a good deal and a bad deal on most used revolvers isn't all that much money. So, don't sweat it. Btw, of all the guns I've purchased, there's only been one where I believe I got the better of the deal. In every other instance I was pleased with what I paid and then, a day or two later, began having second thoughts about it. So, welcome to the club!!!

Been there done that (too many times!!!). Never again. This forum is a great wealty of information. Start educating yourself now for your future purchases. BTW, my last purchase was a factory nickeled Model 15 and I love it.

I just checked Gunbroker, and $500 for a nickel Model 15 does not seem to be too far out of line, especially if you consider shipping and FFL costs.

(I'm assuming the Model 15 in question is indeed nickel, not "cromed.")

I paid $350 for my wife's near mint blued M15. Felt fortunate to get it.

Seems like you paid a little more than necessary. On the other hand, you would have paid more for a new gun not as good as the one you bought.

I wouldn't lose much sleep over it.

Welcome S&W 38 to the best forum IMO, though I'm biased!

I agree with Photoman44's statement 100%!!!
Mine is a great shooter that I've had for 33 years and is still going strong.

Shoot it, enjoy it and don't look back.

If it's a minty nickel 15 you didn't do too bad. Now if those are your pictures and you spent more than $5 for your camera, then you got ripped off on the camera, Shoo

Believe me, it won't be long before we consider a $500 M-15 a genuine bargain. You just bought a bit early.

I've seen many people pay too much for crappy firearms.

You paid a little too much, but you got a great, classic revolver.

That's not so bad. Go shoot and have fun. Then it's all good.

It's all about timing and perspective - case in point: I have a lightly used S&W 4006 with the original box, wrapping paper, tools and documents. A few months ago, I was trying to assess the market for this piece and the vast majority of those I showed it to turned their noses up and said (and rightly so) that the market was glutted with police 4006 trade-ins. The best offer I could get was $300.00. I went to a local gun show last Sunday and just for kicks, put the 4006 in my bag as trading material. As the "loaded gun checker" (he wasn't an LEO) was going through my bag and checking my guns, he opened the gunny sock that the 4006 lives in. I swear you would have thought that he had pulled Excaliber from the stone. He looked at me and asked "...are you going to SELL that Smith?" I said, if the right deal comes my way, yes. Well, the moment passed, and the 4006 didn't make it back out of the bag. What a difference a few months makes, huh?

Regards,

Dave

What is done is done. Your choice is to either worry about having paid too much or just enjoy a nice new gun. I would recommend the second choice. It's only money and it's not like you spent the money on DVD's/CD's/electronic stuff, etc. that is nearly worthless as soon as you take it out of the store. A nice gun is always worth something.
