Took the 686-6 out for a spin today did close range shooting 10 and 15 yards only. This gun is a tack driver at 15 yards but I never tried to be that accurate Double Action. I always thought "just accept the fact that DA will be a larger spread on the target"

as I continue my quest to get more accurate DA, I have decided I can get just as accurate DA as SA. I have been shooting .357 revolvers for over 30 years and have shot very few rounds on double action (until lately)

Ever since I got my concealled carry permit and have really thought about a defensive encounter, it occured to me that I would probably not be cocking the hammer.......would most likely be DA.

So today I just kept reloading and empting the cylinder, firing all six at the bulls eye until BOOM all of a sudden I was nailing the black dot almost every time.

Pull off the target can be totally eliminated with practice. I can feel the difference now and its a great feeling to know I can point and shoot and know I will hit EXACTLY what I want to hit.

As you've discovered, regular practice with the right techniques is essential to mastering the double action trigger on revolvers.

I consider myself fortunate to have grown up with revolvers. In the early 1970s a close friend and I loaded and shot literally thousands of rounds through our Smith & Wesson, Colt, and Ruger guns. After determining that the guns were sighted correctly using single action shooting, we did all our drills D.A.

At first, ranges were less than ten yards, but we progressed to the point of being able to keep all our hits inside the K-zone of standard F.B.I. silhouette targets at distances up to 30 yards. This allowed us to easily transition to 1911-style handguns, as well as the D.A/S.A semi-automatics which became popular during that time frame.

Those early days have served me well over the years, and even with the 2 inch "snubbies" I can score well on a variety of targets.

I can only speak for myself, but shooting a DA revolver has improved my shooting with SA handguns and rifles.

As I continue to renew my shooting experience, the DA/SA experience is as follows: DA groups are now at 6-8" at 20 yard and SA are 2-4" with progress each time out at the range. I'm loving my instructor's S&W 686 357 6", and figure if I can become proficient with that piece I'm good to transition to anything. Also, really enjoyed his Kimber 45 today, more so than the 9MM Sig. (The range was chilly today but I live in LA so it's relative! Two glasses of Argentine white fixed me up as we later had a late lunch back in town.)

I really get how becoming a good DA shooter makes one better all around - just as you have found. Great isn't it?

Here's to close friends and tighter groups,

Rachel

DA shooting IS amazing when you first start doing it in earnest, isn't it ?
It is also addictive.
The only revolver I ever thumb-cock these days is my Ruger Blackhawk.

Exactly! After I started shooting my revolvers DAO I noticed that my overall shooting improved with my autos as well. :)

It' all about trigger control...

You use a 686 as an EDC?
