Seems like it is the guide rod and it's corresponding spot in the frame. The whole action is pretty tight though, so I'm hoping everything will settle in and loosen up a bit. I won't be able to get it off to the range for a little while, unfortunately, but I'm grateful for all the advice given here.
There's another issue with this 3906, but it's cosmetic and involves super glue or epoxy
I'll address it in another thread before too long.

... Oh, 18DAI - I am most definitely going to be shooting it. If I only own one auto from S&W, I think I'd have a hard time finding a better one (for me) than this 3906
