dirty harry remake

IMHO, the character Harry Callahan is defined by Clint Eastwood the man, just like Popeye Doyle is Hackman. Admittedly, that's also decades of time and how many viewings. Anyone attempting to redefine something like that has some pretty big shoes to fill..

I'm not a fan of remakes. Off the top of my head, about the only one I can think of that equaled, or maybe even surpassed, the original is Cape Fear, but that's DiNiro (not to take anything away from Mitchum!).

For the most part, i think these films were 'done right the first time', like many other things of the past. Maybe some young 'uns might prefer a re-do, I'll stick to the originals.

I think remakes of these classics speaks more for the Dry Well Theory than anything else. Steve Martin attempting to do Clouseau comes to mind..

Regarding the original Dirty Harry if you separate the movie from the actor, the film doesn't have legs to stand by itself. Thus if you take that film and put in another actor the actor would have to make the film by his portrayal of maverick cop dirty Harry Callahan. At the time the original film was made, there were folks who preferred that Police not have powerful weapons. Take that attitude and mate it with Harry Callahan carrying a Model 29 .44 Magnum you have a neat contrast. Now, thankfully that attitude isn't prevalent, and some big city police have AR-15s or M16s in their trunks. They also carry Glocks or some similar pistol with 14 or more rounds in the mag (instead of a model 10). I don't think a remake of the Dirty Harry movie would work today.

Perhaps if they set it in a sanctuary city like Chicago or San Francisco and had the BGs be illegal aliens. Then we could have a maverick cop who enforces laws against illegal aliens.

The main character in Bullitt is the same way. A competent homicide detective in a department rife with politics. The main character not only has to fight BGs but he has to contend with top officials in the department who interfere with his doing his job.

How's about Harry (played by Clint) is now The Chief of Police and other young dudes are the Inspectors?
At the end Harry has to dispatch The Bad Guys with his trusty 500 S&W Magnum.

*This just ain't your lucky day - punk* (kinda growl when saying it)

If there is to be a remake made i think this is pretty cool. especially if the bad guy is packing a glock.
