Disappointed with my New Shield 9mm

By this time it should be "broken in." Sounds to me like a couple of the people have said above that there is crud in the striker channel or some other fault having to do with the striker. Get it to an authorized service location and have it fixed.
 
Crud in the striker channel. Test= safety first! With mag removed and pistol cycled multiple times to be sure chamber is EMPTY of ammo, drop a pencil, eraser end down, into barrel with pistol pointed up. Barrel pointed up in "safe" direction. Fire. Pencil should jump considerable distance after being struck with firing pin.
 
In my last combat class of thirty cops with 2 days and 600 rds fired by each person there were 4 jams and all were with the 4 SW M&P autos. The rest used GLOCK with no jams!!

So there were four M&Ps present and all four of them jammed at one time or another - is this what your telling us?
 
two of the MP jams were from one pistol and the other two were double feeds in one pistol so the other two ran fine. So two out of 4 jammed. None of the Glocks jammed.
 
That's rather unusual especially for a "combat class" where participants typically use proven handguns and ammunition known to be reliable.

The last line is all he really wanted to say. Because their popularity obviously points toward a 50% failure rate. [emoji19]

I would agree that I would clean the striker channel first. Maybe a piece of brass shaving or something from the factory in the channel. Does not take much for light strikes. If that does not take care of it call S&W and have them fix it.
 
Yes clean the firing pin channel,this is important in any striker fired autos. You would be surprised at how many L.E. do not clean there. The armourer will do this,but sometimes to late.

Personally I wouldn't try to de gunk anything, since it's a brand new pistol & you've had trouble with it from the get go, I'd send it in & let Smith repair it. I wouldn't complain at all unless I got it back & it didn't work.
 
Best advice just get a Glock for the same reason Socom issues the G19 they work. The Seals have done so too!

NOT normal. That gun MUST go back. Absolutely unacceptable. The lack of an initial cleaning had absolutely NOTHING to do with that.

You either have a firing pin block that is not being completely moved out of the way, thereby dragging on the firing pin causing light strikes, or you have serious headspace issues.

S&W will have to test it, but I would bet you will get at least a new barrel and other parts.

Send it back NOW.

I have Glock's also but I can not say they are any better than my 2 M&P's that I have. I Like them both and both serve different purposes.

I doubt that stuff in the striker channel is the issue, but it is VERY easy to remove the firing pin and clean the striker channel on a Shield. I do it every cleaning just because. OP, if you think that is the issue, watch the You Tube video and you'll see how easy it is to check this.

Thanks for this tip. I tried it and I can conclude that my firing pin is not being consistent. There are times when it would fly out of my barrel and almost hit the ceiling (which is what I am assuming is supposed to happen)

But majority of the time, it would barely shake the pencil inside the barrel. and maybe 1/4 times it would hop out of the barrel a few inches.

I think there might be wrong with the firing pin assembly.

What do you think? Do you have a 100% success rate of it flying out of the barrel?
 
Try a plastic bic pen with the non writing end in the barrel. I've had pistols where the eraser seems to absorb the energy and pencil not move. I tried this with my shield last night. It launches the bic pen but not a pencil wih eraser.
 
The more I thing of your problem....is it worth just sending to s&w and make them swap out the striker and check the chamber depth etc?
