Disassembly and Cleaning MP 15-22 Sport

Hi. New to forum. Just purchased a new MP15-22 Sport. Prior to purchase I watched some YT videos re: diasassembly and cleaning. I'd like to thourougly clean this wepon prior to my first range session. However, the instruction manual does not illustrate and disasemply process beyond a partial separation of the lower (by removing the take down pin), and then removing the charging handle and bolt assembly. However, the videos all show the lower being removed entirely by also partially removing the front pivot/hinge pin (sorry, the manual doesn't provide a name for it). That doesn't seem to want to press out. Should I not remove that pin? If I should, how? Thank you.

why do you feel the need to completely diassemble the gun. your need to clean the areas that will recive the GSR.

So, you just want to just separate the upper and lower? That's easy. The pins are captive so just pull them until they stop. You may need use use a little force for the front pin. Use a punch, keys or something of similar size to push it out.

You do not need to go past what the manual says for dissembling your rifle to clean it. Separating the two halves only make handling a little easier while cleaning.

Thank you all for your replies. As I said, all the videos I've seen showed a complete separation of the lower from the upper, but it was done quite qiuckly and without using a punch. It just seems cleaning would be much more managable with a complete separation. Thank you for the tip, jagular.

Separating the upper from the lower should be an easy action. Push the pin from the left then pull the rear take down pin from the right side of the rifle, then open the upper/lower, then push the front take down pin from the left and pull from the right (they are both retained in the lower) and separate the two. It should require no force or tools to do this, mine doesn't.

I agree with you!

gapwedge: I separate mine completely when cleaning it. Makes the job a lot easier IMHO! The first time pulling out the front pin it was a little stiff but after that it pulls out a lot easier.

Just to let everyone know....A small wooden dowel, a relatively mild tap, and the front pin slid out nicely. It made cleaning SO much easier. I thank all of you for your responses!

Don't be afraid to man handle your rifle a bit. It's not made of fine China. YouTube is a valuable resource for firearms, especially disassembly. Glad you figured it out.
