A True CWA Depression Era Story
My dad told this humorous story, about his fellow CWA workers getting a Hen Chicken drunk. It was the practice of CWA workers, in the winter, to try and find a warm spot to eat their lunch in. They’d find a cow, lying in pasture, alongside the road, and chase her out of her warm spot, and then lye down in it themselves. On one occasion, an old sitting hen was sharing a warm spot with a cow. They chased the cow out of her nest, and One of the men placed that hen on his lap, another man produced a whisky bottle from his pocket, pried the hen’s beak apart, and gave her sips of whisky. The hen soon became happily inebriated, and put on an exuberant show of drunkenness. That show gave the men many great laughs, and took their mind away from their sad state.
