Do I really need a shield?

If need was part of the equation I wouldn't have so many .357's! Variety is one of the greatest things about guns...own at least one of everything and two of the ones you really like!;)

I carry my 9mm Shield occasionally. I know I'm probably in the minority, but it's not my favorite. Not even in my top 5. Not that it's a bad gun. It's a fine gun. Shoots well, feels ok and is very reliable. I just have a handful of carry guns I prefer. My wife likes it and the external safety. If she didn't, I'd probably sell it for a XDs 9mm.

Should you get one? that's your call. I don't think you'll be disappointed, but you may not be enamoured by it.

I had a 9mm Shield that I bought used for $350. Sold it after shooting the XDS45. After the recall the XDS trigger was total garbage. I then sold the XDS and bought a G26. For some reason I want another Shield in 9mm although I have no use for one.

Should you buy it...sure, why not? I'm sure I'll buy another one eventually even though I have no use for one at all. I'm sure this didn't help! ;)

My daily carry is a Shield 9 and I love it. BUT I've just purchased a 3914 to see how I like it and decide which one I prefer to carry daily (expecting to pick it up on Monday from my FFL). So if you want to know if you really need a Shield, I think you'll have to buy one and find out. :D

I backed into the M&P family when I found a Shield 9 at my LGS soon after it was introduced. The size and the trigger impressed me, and I have enjoyed shooting the gun so much I picked up a full sized M&P 9 recently.

I never cared for the Glock, but there are solid reasons that striker fired polymer pistols have become common.

I have enjoyed carrying and shooting the Shield, but by all means try it & others to get the one that works best for you.

I didn't realize that I needed one until I bought one. What an easy to shoot, easy to conceal beauty. Very happy owner here.

Question: "How many guns do you have?"

Answer: "More than I need...but not as many as I want!"

never confuse WANTS with NEEDS...two completely different things...you only want something if you can't afford it...buy it and be happy...:)

Words of wisdom

I have never thought of a want as something you can't afford.

I am thankful my Shield 9 was a need paid with cash.

See my post (#36) where I'll probably buy another on eventually. Well I went to the LGS yesterday, saw nothing in the used cases, went to the S&W section and saw the 9mm Shield there and said I'll take it.

The guy handed the one in the case to me which I then replied "I already know about, no need to handle it." He then brought out one from the back, I looked it over and I'll be picking it up in a week since I only put down enough to make it mine. There you go, that easy. ;)

This is a hard question for anyone to answer for you. First of all, we don't know about your finances. Can you easily afford to buy the Shield, or will it put you in a bind, or will you have to put it on a credit card? If you can easily afford it, that's one thing...if not, you have guns now and you should wait until you can pay cash, and not be strapped in the process.

If you can easily afford it, then the question becomes, will it do anything more for you than the guns you already have? That defines need...but if you don't need it, there's nothing wrong with just wanting it. As long as you can afford it, of course.

Personally, while I think the 3913 is a fine gun, I'd prefer to carry the Shield and keep my 3913 for "nice." Same thing with my 1911s. But that's just me.

So, after giving you all this help, all I can say is that if you can afford it and want it, buy it. It's a great gun...and if you don't enjoy it, then sell it. :)

I have a FS 9 and a 9c. I carry the 9c in a G-Code rig and love it. Don't see much need for a Shield and the 9c conceals very nicely, holds more ammo is easy to shoot and so on. If I want really small I'll stick with my LCP.
