Do I Really Need Two Vehicles?

I bought my Ram pickup new in 2018 and it now has 192K miles but still runs and drives like new and gets 21 mpg in the city and everything looks good. I've had it repaired a couple times and needed to use Uber taxis for a few days which cost me a couple hundred bucks. A second vehicle with insurance, oil changes, wipers, filters, maintenance, etc. would have cost several thousand dollars over the last 6 years.

The only drawback is that now you have the Uber app on your phone.;)

This same question arises about a lot of things.

* If I go hunting with the guys for the weekend, if we only have 1 car what is the wife to do home all alone?

* One of my boats is good for the wife and family, but its no good for fishing. My fishing boat is good for fishing but not comfortable enough for the wife.

* Now don't get me started about the wife....Her oft comment is Why do you need more than 1 gun?

(my comment to her is that guns are better than wives - you can trade in an old 44 for two 22s.)

The Yaris is small, light and a lot of fun to drive on mountain roads.
Maybe a cold air intake, alloy wheels, sticky tires, free flowing exhaust and some suspension work.
Turn it into a rally Yaris....
I liked that sq-back 4WD Tercel you've mentioned way back when.
Ms.M drove the 2WD version but we put a multitude of miles on that thing hauling us and the boys on some serious road tripping.

In the same situation. Wife's Buick Envision has 57,000 on it and has about $5k left to pay off. My 2013 Highlander has 209,000 and runs as well as new. Talked to my lawyer this Am about probating her will and he told me why? She only had the Envision and no other real property. He said just put Envision on my insurance and keep it til paid off. Title will come in her name and he said just transfer it to me. Not sure but he’s the lawyer. BTW, he’s a big gun guy , just got back from a photo trip to Africa.

I have the same situation, I decided to keep my wife's car both for sentimental reasons and to have a backup.
Didn't really drive the 2nd car, less than 500 miles in the past 5 years - until today.
I think I trashed my Odyssey on Saturday (electrical and transmission) so I am forced into the Accord. I would not have had time to get a rental deal before I am off to Tulsa tomorrow.
The added cost of Insurance, Maintenance and fees has been less than the associated rental costs when the Odyssey was in the shop for a couple of days.
Every so often I have thought about getting rid of her car but here in Southern California, being such a car culture, you might as well be dead without a working auto to get around.

Keep your wife's car. My wife passed away in 2015. She had been driving a 2000 Toyota Echo, I a 1999 Honda Civic, until she was less comfortable driving than riding.

For a few years, I had two cars, which was a convenience occasionally. My Civic, with more miles on it, became uneconomical to maintain a few years ago. I still have the Echo.

Aside from surrounding me with her presence, it kind of grew on me and reminded me of her wisdom in choosing it, even though it had a slushbox. She could drive a stick, but she really didn't care one way or the other.

I just got brakes renewed last week. God willing, it will be with me for a while.

Living in WV, as snubbyfan does, we still pay property tax on any vehicle we own, but considering the Yaris is 15 years old, the taxes should be minimal. Insurance is mandatory in WV, and collision is a good idea, considering deer take more cars in WV than stupid uninsured drivers. But collision in a 15 year old car means totalled even if it's drivable.

Inspection has gone to two years, I think, and license tags are two years as well. I say drive it around home and the flat areas, and save the Toyota for the weekends and fun. Year or two from now, decide if two cars are really needed.

I've seen the IA trim used in some class of world rally cross.
I kinda saw the same potential when I rented one for my grandmother's funeral

This guy.

'86 Tercel 4wd station wagon, great car.
I usta carry my bicycle on the roof rack and I'd sleep in it when I went camping.

Seriously? What's it costing to rent a car there for 2-3 days, $200? Even if it costs $300, I fail to see how the cost of insurance, registration, and maintenance on a second car can be less than $300, even if you insure liability only. Sure as heck you couldn't do it here in NV.

A SPARE comes in handy when the other on breaks down......I have 2 trucks. The old Chevy Z71 1996(bought new) I still use around the farm going in the woods(scratches don't matter anymore)......The newer one a Chevy 4x4 bought new in 2018 is my town/travel truck......Best of both worlds.

Yes Snubby, yes you do because one always breaks, eventually.

I have three vehicles.

Have three (3) vehicles. Had four (4) but sold the Harley last fall.

Each serves a purpose; each gets driven regularly.

Keep your Yaris, Snubby. That’s my vote. 😉

Be safe.
