DO NOT ASK sign

I used to dream of buying a cabin with my brother in some remote and beautiful area to use as an occasional retreat.

Thinking it through, though, I gave up on the idea as I think an unoccupied cabin would be a draw for all sorts of miscreants, leading to considerably more headaches than pleasure for me.

I also wanted a cabin but then I figured I needed a moat with gators, drawbridge, fence with razor wire;)

Yeah I get wrapped around the axle on this issue. Guess I need to get to know the sheriff better. Last time I ran a plate and took him the info he shrugged it off and said yeah he's a local fireman - he was probably drunk but otherwise harmless.
DING! DING! DING! Sounds to me like you live in a corrupt, likely inbred, county where certain families believe they have rights to everything. You need to find a way to get the Feds involved and flush the lot of them flushed to club-fed. When we had Operation G-Sting here, local LE found out about it from the local media once the arrests were made, I believe. Bijou clue-ette there, I think.

I have stepped across the firebreak once or twice before in my younger days, so I'm not perfect. It was in an area close to home I could walk into, and nobody was around. I was brought up hunting prime properties for quail. My Father knew someone who had property and quail in their family: two fishing ponds, too.

It helped me to understand better when owning property. Wildlife Management Areas, quota hunt applications, some military bases, and friends with friends is where I did 99% of my hunting, though, in later years. Never wanted to pay high dollar for a place to hunt. Guided hunts out of state for ducks and geese at lodges once or twice a year I could afford...sometimes. Never really needed more venison than what I could get on the above places. I do like to hunt, though.

As the season approaches, you guys be safe. Make your plans how to handle things, and get ready. People are going to be people, and there are all kinds out there. Some folk have no respect for others. Some people think they can do anything they want. Some parts of the country do not mind people asking if geese are in their field. They might even go with you the next morning. Having your kid hunting with you, please be safe.

People and their properties should be left alone. My attorney said to post the property, including "Violators Will Be Prosecuted!" He said he would see to it. Good luck and Godspeed.

To the OP, put up a sign requiring written permission and an out of state relatives address to send it to. Use their dogs name as addressee. Post notice that written permission must be on their person when they cross your fence line. Instruct said friend or relative to put all requests in the trash.

My mountain cabin and family refuge is 100 miles from the house. We go there often, but we don't live there all the time. The bastard 4 wheelers are all local people, and thus are there every day. I am afraid to cause a ruckus because they could do a lot of damage to the cabin and my trail cameras may not be enough.

At first I took a chainsaw and cut trees across the path. Next time there the trees had all been cut up and the logs neatly placed next to the trail.

I was approached by the President of the local Snowmobile Club and he asked for permission. I told him that those machines had destroyed new plantings that my son had diligently worked on the past Fall. He said sorry, but it was a Federal trail and they would go there anyway even without permission. I said I would contact the local authorities if I saw trespassers. He said HE was the local Town Justice.

He did agree to put gates up to prevent access to anyone but his Club. Next Spring the gates were still closed but the 4 wheelers had forged a trail around them.

IMHO, best to live with the locals.
No way Jim. My 95 acre lease across the road from my cabin is a prime example of. There is a power line ROW that crosses a 200' corner of my property. All the locals try to access my property using this route. Mostly 4 wheelers in the summer but also trespassers and poachers in the fall. One guy was particularly bad. I suspected it was him but couldn't prove it. He's a real dirtbag but that's another story. Few yrs ago a neighbor told me if you prosecute one word gets out and it will stop. Well I caught him on a trailcam and had him ticketed. He was found guilty at a bench trial and fined. No trespassing evidence in last several yrs. This is the fool going across my upper logging road.

Our house has a 6' chain link fence with padlocked gates. The property is posted. I do not want strangers feeling comfortable coming here. Friends call, if I have not called them. If we are haiving work done, we give the workers a number to call so we can let them in. Our little (45 pound BoxerXBoston) dog is fascinated with people, so she is good with visitors. We just spent a month in a hotel after my transplant and she was happy to meet staff and other guests. She also likes walks on the nearby college campus meeting students.

But: before her, we had working breeds; mostly rotts. They helped discourage stupid behavior. I try really hard not to interact with uninvited person. I generally tell the they are committing a crime and that I am calling the police. A booking exception pending court tends to teach the non-compliant to un(screw) themselves. I am not social and I don't care if I hurt someone's feelings.

I'm not unkind, but I'm tired of people looking in my windows and saying we didn't think anyone lived here. Can't tell you how many times I'm away and the cameras show a guy circling my house and peering through every window.
John I completely understand where you are coming from and would never advocate looking in anyone's windows. It was my nephew's idea, he was in the banking industry and was very good with people. He said "If you don't ask, you'll never know."

I get it. In my case, though, it's not a single rider, but a group of a dozen locals that ride thru all the local mountains. In the Winter they are on their snowmobiles. My cabin is ripe for vandalism. As long as they stay away, I'll just put up with it. If I have damage, my cameras will show who it was.

At least when we are hunting on the upper trail, nobody shows up.

Grew up on a 300 ac farm in S.E. Va. Shot a lot and hunted with friends from in town and did not have problems with trespassing hunters until the late 80s. Friends with class 3 guns would come out and we would blast away all day. Closest neighbor was 1/4 mile so not so bad as we had a field surrounded by woods. Hunting issues were spot lighting idiots at night. House was 1/4 mile off road behind big field so the spotlighters shooting at deer could hit house or our cars. Local Game Warden was friend as we shot together. One nightbwife and I had just gone to bed when house was lit up by some idiot on the road. Grabbed one of my 30 Carbines and unloaded 30rounds of tracer way over the road. Light went out and car sped away. About 30 minutes later police showed up and asked if I had fired. Told them yes and showed them a bullet hole in the transformer from some idiot. They got all rilled up but then I told them just a minute while I call the Game Warden. Spotlighting was illegal regardless. Turns out two high school kids did it and were in back of police car. Cops didn't know what to do and I told them they needed to talk to their chief Sgt. of detectives as he was a shooting buddy of mine and we went to high school together. They left and guess I should of called the Game Warden….

Im in VA and currently have the same problem. Now trespassers are coming in with ATV's through adjoining property that owners live out of state. My signs have been torn down and they are creating trails and using my trails and roads… New signs and chains going up this week along with game cameras.
Caltrops far, far away from anywhere, in one of their trails

Kansas has the purple paint law. As long as your corner posts of your property (or trees etc.) have purple on them, which can be paint or tape, anyone on the property has to have written permission to hunt, fish or trap. I have 200 acres in the middle of two sections. Only one access road in, and I keep the gate padlocked. Still have issues from the neighboring ground as most of it is leased to outfitters. Apparently they fail to tell their clients about our purple paint laws and I typically have to escort a couple of hunters off my ground every deer season.
