Good post!
Made we wonder where I stashed old #1, so I went looking, found her standing in the corner of my ammo closet, gathering dust. Like one of the first posters, I bought a Model 67 Winchester single-shot .22LR. Longish 27" barrel and iron sights, with the "Artillery" bolt that you have to pull back to cock the rifle. Even then, they had a safety on it too. Only gun I ever had that I was able to remember the Serial number. This was my great-uncles Hog gun. One shot near the ear, one hog for the table. That was the easy part

Paid $1 to Uncle for the rifle when I turned 13. It came with Weaver scope bases, and it was D&T, but no scope. The stock was trashed, so this was my 1st attempt at a refinish, when I was 13 years young. I can still see where I put too much "filler" in the pores that were damaged, but I won't ever change it. She don't stand up to my Anschutz silhouette rifle, but she sure has better memories, and she cost a heck of a lot less

Dad wouldn't let me have what I really wanted, a new Nylon 66 from the dime-store. Said he wasn't going to have me out shooting willy-nilly, and besides, the Nylon 66 cost $45 and Uncle made me a deal for $1. Finally got a new-in-box Nylon 66, 38 years later. Only cost me $500 to pay homage to the feelings of nostalgia, but man, does that Nylon gun shoot! The Old Man was a tightwad, so he must have been worried about the cost of .22 ammo. Best I can remember, it was about the price of a school lunch then, maybe 75 cents. Still, the Winnie was a great learning tool. I just hope one of my relatives will want to keep it around and shoot it when I get dirt thrown in my face...
Thanks for bringing back the memories!
