P&R Fan,
Thanks, I haven't had much experience with j-frames for several years, had a model 60 for back up to 66 when I was an officer, have several k-frames but just now getting back into j-frames. Tried the small auto route just keep coming back to the revolver. The model 64 marking threw me , but hey i couldn't pass it up.
Thanks again

Kbm6893 yes there is a little faint half moon the I think should have been the zero. I knew it was a 640 but the guy at the pawn shop had it listed as a 64 $ 200 so I didn't argue and paid the man $200 out the door and was the proud new owner of a great cow piece.Much easier to carry than my normal 2.5 or 3 66. Hey one mans tomato another mans tomato. It now has a good home.

Email S&W with the serial number. they responded to my inquiry in less than 24 hours.

I would have bought it, too. And I wouldn't have cared what it was marked.

I would make sure the gun is registered as a Model 640
and NOT a Model 64.

fbazref, I may do that just for my piece of mind. snubbiefan , I hear you I almost felt like I needed to put a mask on when I whisked out the cash so quick I don't find to many deals like that anymore. The last one was two years ago when the wife bought me a 66-4 f-comp for 450 with two diget ser number. Kbm6893 you must have read my mind my thoughts exactly glad you found yours sounds like good deal. coach 22 I wondered about that also and asked the dealer at the pawn shop. He said it was logged in his books as a model 64 department trade in so he had to list it as such when sold. I did ask to have him put it in writting which he did with no problem and have reciept and everything also. That way if there was ever a question I can show it was properly transferred. Thanks for all the input isn't this forum a great place? tbird

The 640's (38) are GREAT. I got mine in 1992.
It came as if it went through the Custom Shop.
All edges are rounded and smooth. The way quality control USED to be.
I also have a nickel 49, electroless nickel 442 and 340PD.
If I could keep just one, it would be the 640. A VERY strong gun.
Mine is loaded with Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure 158's.
Standard Pressure Short Barrel Low Flash Heavy .38 Special Pistol & Handgun Ammunition
A close 2nd choice would be Corbon DPX 110 +P's.
Enjoy it.

coach 22,
you have a good head start on me, other than my recent 640 mine are all k-frames 19's and 66's, but if this one is as good as it seems I will have to find room for more. I know what you mean it is as if it has a carry melt and trigger work already, not like todays examples. Thanks for the tips on ammo which one hits closer to POA.
Thanks,'

Yes....definitely....we need another j-frame fan. You just can't stop with one.....but get an older one like you did this time. I searched and searched and looked and looked until a 38-2 practically fell into my lap. Some folks think it's a little ugly, but it gives you the option of SA fire as well as being a great carry piece.
