Does anyone use turn signals anymore?

If it's any consolation, the number 1 probable cause for pulling over a car down here is 'failure to deploy turn signal within 100 feet of an intersection" or "failure to deploy turn signal before changing lane". It beat out swerving within lane of travel  It even beats out "He looked at me and seemed nervous" :D

Does using my middle finger count as a signal ?
But I see that happen a lot in most cases they are too busy texting to use the signal , BUT maybe the tex the signal ?

I was waiting on a hearing in a civil case and watched a young peacock of a criminal defense lawyer preparing to destroy probable cause for a traffic stop that resulted in a big drug bust. The state trooper looked to be about 70 and as wily as a coyote.

He told the young lawyer, “son you are right, there was no probable cause for the stop other than your client was going the wrong way on a one-way, with no lights at 2:30 a.m. Oh and I forgot, he was going 30 over the speed limit!” I got paged out of court so I did not get to see the rest. But I did see the client being led out in shakles later. I don’t think that is generally a good sign in the criminal defense practice.

My experience is that when you have an old (experienced) LEO vs a young full of piss and vinegar defense lawyer it usually does not end well.......:D The same applies when you switch positions ;)
That's how everybody learns. You don't learn squat in either the academy or law skule!

I was speaking with my wife about this very subject and she indicated she thought they were for decoration only and with all the Christmas lights out she did not want to confuse people. Add to that that if there is no one behind her why bother?

To listen to her explain it ...it all makes logical sense.....

Not to mention the fact that if you are in a left turn lane or a right turn lane everybody knows which way you are going...same with straight thru lanes......all seems natural to her.....

Use mine all the time, except when changing lanes and no one else is around!
Anyway I like seeing the whole truck display on the dashboard when they don’t turn off! ;)

Around here nobody uses them because everybody knows everyone else and what they do. Oh, there goes Frank off to get to the liquor store when it opens to pick up his quart. Thats Jim, he always pulls in at the pawn shop when he comes back from the hardware store.

Actually, there is a bit of truth to that, but, for the most part where I live every one is courteous, patient and easy going. Being a jerk in traffic around town would probably not end well. It might have been the cook at the steak house you cut off or deputy Billie's mom. We got some local rules to. If you driving down the road below 60mph and meet someone at least raise an INDEX finger if not a hand to acknowledge them. If 2 cars arrive at an intersection marked or not, you first wave the other person on and don't proceed until he goes or waves you on instead. If 2 trucks are stopped in the road with the drivers having a conversation about the weather, just go around or wait. If your in a hurry to get somewhere, get through the check out line while the clerk catches up with the lady in front of you I suggest you move somewhere else. It takes time to be social.

I was following a police officer a while back, and saw him make a turn without signaling into the parking lot of a store. I considered stopping and pointing out that he should be setting an example, but then my better judgement kicked in, and I chose not to.

From my observation, turn signals are ignored ALMOST as much as the speed limit, or actually stopping (really stopping, not a rolling stop) for a stop sign.

I don't want to go off on a rant here, but, well, okay, I won't.

No, you should have said something. He cant do anything about it, and if he did? it's harassment. If harassed, go to a Judge and spill the beans, the officer will definitely will stop (unless he is related to the Judge that is? :D)

My sister caught a cop speeding for no viable reason, chased him down and gave him a "What fer Davy" and he couldn't do a damned thing about it-except to learn to set a better example in public.

I even use hand signals when I'm on my bicycle.

Just make SURE it isn't the extended right middle finger-or they might run ya over. In Germany-that and the thumb tucked between both fore and middle-finger-will get you arrested.:D An eyetalian guy did the eyetalian flip-off salute to my friend Susanne when she was crossing the Strasse in Goslar-and he turned around in his red death trap-and saw me giving him the American version to him in return. :D

Don't diss my friends......... The eyetalian in the red death trap-sped away.........

around here..."drivers" seldom use turn signals, ignore stop signs and speed limits and race to be first to the red light.....

Here too, I almost got hit yesterday when I was trying to go home after seeing the dead dog.

Sigh,ya'll haven't experienced the wonders of driving in MIAMI FL. Turn signals....what's that!! Here are some of the "wonderful"experiences I've had...woman doing 65 on the expressway, putting on makeup & steering with her knees.....guy in far left lane he gets green turn signal ,turns right!!Or how about older guy with chick on the back, passing me at 330 am...doing a wheelie at 80 + down the highway!! Turn signals,I use them all the time. Some turn on their turn signals to make a turn &never turn!
Finally & this really gets me ...the # who have no license or insurance!!
Wecome to Miami!

Yeah, right.

He may not be able to do anything to you right then and there, but he can sure be on the lookout for you from that day forward.

No thanks man, I learned a long time ago that you're WAY better off not to mess with cops. You want to do something about it you call the precinct and lodge a complaint citing the car number, time and location. That way even if he gets your name the cop can't put a face or a vehicle with that name - unless he already knows you.

If that's the case you're probably already screwed anyway....

A turn signal does not necessarily mean the driver intends to turn. I was the 1st car in the left turn pocket at an intersection, with a similar car in the pocket facing me. Our LT light turned green and he barreled FORWARD across the intersection with his LT signal still on, passing me on my left. Had I begun to move and turn, I would have been creamed.

Or the time a driver in the right lane made a u-turn in front of me while I was in the left lane. Don't recall if he signaled, I was too busy braking. Fortunately, it was in a 25 MPH zone. You can't make this stuff up.

About the same here especially on the gravel, not unusual for a 3rd vehicle to stop and join the conversation.

Seat belts and turn signals are auto printed in my brain. I too signal when no one is there, even off the gravel road to my drive.

And traffic lights are another irritant.

I tell my wife and others when they are driving that they pulled out when the lite turned green. They always say it's green to me I have the right of way.

Nope, green means you can proceed when the intersection is clear. Traffic laws don't tell you what you can do they tell you what you can't do.

If they get huffy I ask if they've ever noticed things in an intersection, like bumpers or glass. Then I ask if they know how it got thrre. By not looking left, right and left before proceeding.

One of the many rules of being a "Senior Citizen" is"Turn Signals".
1a: when traffic is following you, keep the turn signal blinking and every few miles change the turn signal from right to left and then back and forth.

A rule that goes in that category that you missed was put on your 4way flashers when out for a drive, it keeps everyone guessing.:D
