Does or has anyone use(d) the lock on their revolver?

Note that if you ever need to have S&W work on the gun under warranty claim, it needs to go back to them with ILS installed. Therefore, best to hang onto the parts or even pass them along in any sale.
I have not used the lock on my 637. I do not feel the need to remove it. I do know where the key is and I occasionally check the lock after a range session. I shoot it: I clean it: i carry it.. with little concern. Happy Sunday everyone !

Never used it. Never will. The key's in the box where I put it away. I ignore the lock completely. Don't even consider it.
My wife's 642 still has the lock. She doesn't know it has a lock or that it's ugly. Keep in mind this gun also has pink rubber grips. She doesn't know they are ugly either. My 686 and 627 have the plug. The lock is useless. If you need to secure the weapon, unload it. If necessary put a padlock thru the frame window. Much more secure that way anyway.

I have never used the lock or heard of anyone who does. Utterly stupid, like the warnings on toothpaste not to make a meal of the whole tube.
I don't mind the lock being there all that much but I sure the hell don't place the slightest amount of value in having it.

I tried mine to see how it works, even had the side plate off checking for lube, how things operate, etc.
I don't use it, doesn't bother me, hasn't failed to operate properly. Non issue.

I guess I really have no opinion of the lock on mine because its the only s&w that I've owned (so far),
This may or may not be true. I called S&W CS they said each gun is evaluated on an individual basis. I asked if a gun with the IL removed would still be covered by the warranty. He said most likely yes. He said any modification would void the warranty. Even spring replacement. He was very vague about giving a definitive answer. He said that if a gun came in really buggered up by the owner; it wouldn't be covered. If a gun came in relatively clean without the IL it would be covered.

I have the IL on about half of my S&W revolvers. I have never used the lock, and it has never involuntarily locked.
All else being equal, I would prefer to not even have the lock, but all else is seldom equal.

The top of the three Mountain Guns is a 625 bearing Miculek grips and has no lock. The middle one is a 629 with no lock.
The bottom one is a 29 Mountain Gun with the lock. I've never used it

None of mine have locks...
If they build a "lock-free" 3" model 60 357 J-frame I might get one of those as my next gun.

The one gun I have with a lock is my 44 and since I only use it at the range, I do lock it when I store it. I'd have to think about it if I had a carry gun. However, when I store my guns, I do use some type of lock.

I've never used mine. I keep my guns locked in a safe until I use them. When not in use they go into the safe. I usually can't remember what day of the week it is, so I would have a problem with using a lock.
There's a lock on my new Smiths?............I though it was an oil hole.

I only have one with a lock. Its a four inch N Frame that is rarely carried. I'm sixty and there are no children in my home. There are no grandchildren yet. My guns stay in a safe unless I'm using them. So, I just ignore the lock. If I was a guest in a home that had or might have children in it and I had to remove my gun and put it somwhere out of my immediate control, I would use the lock. I can think of a couple other improbable situations when I might use it. So, I don't use it. It doesn't bother me and the revolver that has it, has one of the best DA trigger actions I have ever tried so the lock doesn't matter to me.

No. If it's in use, don't want it locked. If it's not in use, its in the safe.

I think a better alternative is to have a gunsafe in your vehicle and use it when needed away from home.
There is more to locking than prevention of misuse. One needs to do what is necessary to prevent theft, so maybe not a safe but at least a locking steel cabinet, bolted to the floor and wall, goes with gun ownership.

I only have locks on my 63-4 and 63-5, but have never used them. The other 8 revolvers are all pre lock
I have the il lock on my686's and,I use it only niece brings her brat childs over for us to babysit. I did check the lock when one of my 4 686's locked up and the spring broke in half. sent the revolver back to smith on their dime with a not still apart of the side plate and they saw it and called me and I told them to make it thicker a tad. Smith sent me an extra spring that is thicker and said they were very sorry about the problem and would make sure it would never happen again along with a letter from our lawyers.
