Does this mean I did not overpay a lot for my 5" pre-27?

Has it been re-finished?

If you look at the S&W stamp on the side plate you'll see the raised edges where it curled the metal a little when stamped. That's a good sign of an original finish.

To the OP, you did fine. Five years from now it'll be a steal at that price.

Do you still have the M-27 that you've posted before? When was it made?

I've had both five-inch and six-inch M-27's and pre-27's and find the six-inch easier to shoot really well

Geez you guys......stop now....drool is ruining my keyboard.

Me?............I'm stuck with my Model 28-2, flatter finish...shorter tube, no box, no docs, nutin but fun shootin.

Kinda like being stuck with Barbies little sister....you know the one with glasses, nerdy duds, but usually tries to hang out with the cool crowd (like your 27 and the others posted here).

Anyway..........I love the 28 anyway.

I too had to bow out of the 27 market for now because of the prices. No way I can sneak over or even a thousand past my wife. Found a nice 28-2 4 inch to scratch the itch for now. One day I am going to find the right one though!

I bought a three and a half inch pre-27 with box, matching stocks, and tools a while back as a birthday gift for myself. Cost me $1,195.00, plus tax. I was happy too pay that price. I think if you get what you want, you never really pay too much. "Going prices" are just some folks opinions, and you know what they say about opinions:)

I bought a couple of the long barrel pre 27s this month, and thankfully a forum member encouraged me on the purchase of my 2nd pre 27. They are very special guns that are becoming less available, and it's nice to have something with some history, beauty, and are great shooters on top of that.

Now, when I reflected on hedging, thinking I may be paying too much, I realize how grateful I am to have such a legendary revolver. You can trust you will not loose on buying your legend, and relish your sound judgement to strike while the iron is hot!:D

Enjoy that beauty!:):)

You are the kind of guy that gives me a bad name!

No complains he says....

What a killer deal.

It was a "killer deal." But I have a 30 year history with this particular dealer, having been friends with him before he bought the store.

On the day in question, I had already purchased from him a very nice nickel Kit Gun for the going rate. Then he pulls this Model 27-2 from under the counter and says "I've been saving this one for you." I looked it over and he tells me what he would sell it to me for. I looked at him and said, "It's a deal!" I definitely went home happy that day.

$5 dollar tip on a $50 meal is only 10%
Just saying

If you did overpay, it was not by much. I doubt I will ever be able to justify a 5" M27 for myself. However, living in Jersey is a problem you need to fix quickly.

If you WILLINGLY paid their asking price, then you did not overpay, because it was worth that much to YOU. What someone else might or might not want to pay for it is irrelevant.

I bought my 5" pre-27 last July for $1300. It is the virtual twin of yours EXCEPT it had the wrong grips on it when I bought it. I then bought a pair of period correct magnas from a forum member for $140. So I have $1440 in mine and don't have grips numbered to the gun. By my estimation, you did very well!
