Need educated on Pre-27 before I buy

Pawn shops buy low and sell high. They probably have a lot of wiggle room in their price. If the gun is still there when you go back, offer them $900 bucks. Those long tubes are not the most popular ones.

It would make a fine shooter, but not collector grade (as everyone agrees). Price it accordingly.

Me, I'd a found out from the family member what the pawn shop paid him for the gun and go from there. If it was a consignment, what price did the guy agree to? A lot of information regarding the transaction missing that would contribute to what price I would offer. Everyone has to make a living but you can be sure the pawn shop screwed the guy and no point in giving the shop more than necessary. (Can't help the lawyer in me coming our)

There were two of us that had our names on this and I was on the top of the list. I notified them today to pass it along to the other individual. I will check back with them in a few weeks and see if it is still there and possibly make an offer.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

I was #2 on the call list ronnymc204 mentioned to have a chance to buy this nice Pre-Model 27. I’ve done business with these guys for years and stopped by on 11-17-23 to pick up a Model 30 w/2” barrel that they had taken care of the FFL for me. They asked if I would like to take a look at this particular Pre-Model 27 that they had taken in. As ronnymc204 had mentioned above they had bought this Pre-Model 27, a Model 29-2 w/8 3/8” barrel, a Model 629 w/8 3/8” barrel, and 2 Model 25’s that were commemorative’s. They had to hold them until 11-24-23 (Black Friday) before they could sell them. I had just spent over 2 hours in the dentist chair and had a mouth full of gauze because of tooth extraction and temporary crown work. When I looked at this Pre-Model 27 I suspected the presentation box and label were bogus because this gun showed mfg. of 1954-55 and was a 5 screw gun, the label was added and incorrect. I had seen the flame cutting on the top strap and the hole tapped for the scope mount. This morning I received a call from the gun shop that ronnymc204 had passed on this purchase and asked if I was still interested. This afternoon I went to the gun shop and looked at this gun closely. I was allowed to remove the grips and check the grip frame and the pictures will show confirmation of return to the factory for repair, barrel, red ramp w/outline maybe, target trigger and hammer, who knows. The B at the rear of the barrel is confirmed on the back of the cylinder and the grip frame also with the diamond mark also as handejector and Doc44 and others have mentioned. The presentation box needs new inserts but the box itself is flawless. The nice diamond target grips with the football cutout appear to be Goncalo Alves and not Walnut, but we know there’s a possibility they could be original, but I don’t think so. This Pre-Model 27 in 357 magnum is definitely a nice 5 screw gun but it has definitely been scoped and shot and I don’t think the original owner was out to fool anyone, but just had this gun fixed like he wanted it to be. I just happened to see this thread that ronnymc204 started and I thought how unusual is that in the fact we’re both members of this fine forum. Coincidence for sure. I also passed on this Pre-Model 27 because it’s certainly not original and I don’t need another 8 3/8” barrel Model 27 for a shooter as I have 2 (one w/Leopold 4X EER Scope) from the early 70’s. I told them I would make them an offer but would not be interested at the $1599.00 price they had on the gun.

That flame cutting is not severe.
My old load with a bunch of 296 and a 158 gr bullet could do that in 100 rds. :D

I agree the flame cutting is not bad on the Pre-Model 27.
Speaking of WW296 Powder and 158 gr bullet and flame cutting, I can relate to that for sure.
The one Model 27-2 that I scoped for Hunters Pistol Metallic Silhouette Matches in the late 70’s and early 80’ was very accurate with 15 grain of 296 and the 162 gr RCBS SWC, with or without a gas check. Didn’t seem to make any difference.
Flame cutting don’t take long. I still have the gun.
Surely this is not too far off subject.
If so, I promise to do better.
