Does Your 4506 Do This?

One of my 4506s has started to exhibit a weird trait. When I load a round in the chamber and then drop the mag to top it off, the next round has already been stripped off the mag and comes rattling out of the grip. Sometimes it stays in the mag, but most of the time the next round comes rattling out. It has done this with several different magazines. Anyone else have a 4506 that does this?

Yes, my 4506-1 and my 4516-3, and one 4566 all do this.

All of them function 100% though - with no stoppages. I wouldn't worry about it. :) Regards 18DAI.

I am pretty sure that the #2 round got dragged far enough forward due to magazine spring tension that when you pull the mag out, it gets pulled out of the mag because the bullet nose hangs up on the frame.

I am guessing you have to pull the mag out and it doesn't drop free, right? This probably doesn't happen with subsequent rounds...

I see no problem with it. If it happens beyond the 2nd or 3rd round in the mag, you might want to get it checked.

In my 4506 the second round is pulled forward and slightly nose up but it does not fall free. I have 4 different factory mags and they all do the same thing. Try stretching your magazine spring a little.

The pistol has always run 100%.....never, EVER, had a failure to feed, fire, or eject. The strange thing is, that when I use the same magazines in my other 4506, there is never a problem. Weird.......

Also, this is the only time a magazine will not drop free from the grip. Once I've topped off the magazine and re-insert it, it drops free no problem. I have all different kinds of these magazines.....metal follower, orange follower, and black follower. They all exhibit this behavior in this particular pistol. How very strange......

I have that exact issue with my Taurus PT1911 9mm. The second round gets stripped forward a little bit and when you remove the mag the bullet pops out and falls out of the mag well. If you pull the magazine out very slowly the bullet will stay in the mag but you can see it's pushed out a bit.

The solution is to load the round to be chambered in a spare mag that only has the one round in it. Then remove that mag and insert the one with the full load. I have had the same issue in other guns.

That actually is a pretty good idea......I hadn't thought to do that.

I guess I could buy a brand new magazine and see if it does the same thing. If it doesn't then maybe I should think about replacing springs.

My 5904, 3913, 4566 all do the same, partially strip the next round from the mag. All three still 100% reliable.

It has always been reliable.....just strange that this is only a recent occurrence. My other 4506 doesn't do it even with the same magazine.

My 1006 has never exhibited the same trait. Wonder why that is?

Not uncommon. Usually only noticed when removing a magazine to "top off", not because it causes feeding issues during actual live-fire.

I've noticed it to occur more often when the mag springs are brand new, and at their heaviest ... as well as much later on, when the springs are becoming weak and approaching the point where they ought to be replaced.

I carried a 4586 daily for about 8 years and noticed a similar occurrence from time to time. The round wouldn't pop out of the mag, but it would work its way forward a bit.

I would not recommend stretching the magazine spring. Buy new ones. They are inexpensive. I bought the XP Wolf springs for mine and they work great.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Im glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. Guess I'm going to be doing a lot of spring replacing.....last count was 15 magazines.

My new to me 4506 did that just once yesterday while 'topping' it off, but I slammed the magazine home with a shade too much force when it happened, so that's not the guns fault a 2nd round stripped.
