I had loaned my 686-6 to a friend of mine for an extended period. He and his wife is a smoker. When he brought the gun and it's case back to me it wreaked of smoke. I cleaned the plastic and took the foam out of the case and cleaned it as well. I put the cleaned foam outside on the bench to dry and air out. In the meantime my wife put the dog out in the yard, and you guessed it, he shredded my newly cleaned foam. Where can I get similar foam to replace in my case?

Craft stores such as Joann Fabrics or Michael's have foam. You'd have to cut it to size of course. You may also try calling S&W for some replacement foam. Worst case scenario, you can order a replacement case from them which will come with the foam in it. For quick, dirty, and cheap, try a craft store.

It's a current production item (along with the case), so I'd call customer service and ask if they can replace the foam lining. They might even do it for free if you tell the dog eating story

.Thanks guys, I will give customer service a try. I bought that gun brand new and would like to keep it all nice and stock. Only issue I have is I wish I had bought a 3" barrel instead of the 4". Cant balme that one on the dog can I???

After calling customer service, unfortunately I cannot procure foam from them. They have of course switched from the plastic cases back to the boxes.....To the craft store I shall go. Or wait, perhaps I could trade this gun for the 3" version to get a properly foamed case. lol

What pray tell do these boxes look like? I have gotten two funs returned to me by Smith in some very stout plain cardboard boxes which I am saving for use for some of my guns without boxes. I free handed a S&W logo on it and you can't tell it from an original

I got a guy with a pretty heavy New England accent. He didnt sound too amused or sympathetic to my story. At least he didnt suggest I "wait a couple days and try to recover it".

We were at the gun show this last weekend and I did see some S&Ws had plastic cases and some had boxes. They are nice, heavy boxes. And they do have the S&W logo, etc. But they are still just boxes. No comparison to the nice plastic cases that you can actually lock and use for transport.
Side note - we did pick up a nice plastic case at the show with the foam in it for another gun I have. It was only $11. Of course it does not say S&W, but still a nice case for the price. You could always buy an off brand case and use the foam from it in your old case.

Be aware that the case you have was designed for shipping purposes only and the foam will absorb moisture from the air and hold it next to the gun. If you store your gun in that case there's a VERY good chance it will rust. I have seen this happen many many times. Fabric or foam lined cases are only good for transporting the gun to a range or a shop for short periods. They're not suitable for storage.

Was playing around on the S&W site and found they actually sell the blue plastic case - small and large. Price is about $11-12.

Wow, guess I had an uninformed service rep....I specifically asked if I could buy the whole case and he said no....
I actually ordered the small blue case (states it is for gun up to 6" barrel)from the online store. It was $10.58 and with shipping came to just over $17. Hope I got the right size.

SW has been out of stock on these cases for awhile. I had one on backorder for weeks before cancelling the order. They are avalible on Ebay. Also, I store my guns in them wrapped in VCI paper and have had no rust issues.

I had my four legged friend eat the foam out of the seat of a '71 Norton Commando. When I first discovered it he seemed proud of his accomplishment, I had to laugh it was my fault for not closing the garage door. New foam, no problemo.

I just sent a gun back for repairs.....They suggested I send it in the blue plastic case. I sure hope it doesnt come back in a cardboard box.
Anyone that has experience sending guns back to S&W, would they send anything but my original box back ya think?

I doubt they would switch a box. Now if anything on the gun was not stock, you can forget about seeing that anymore.
