Dog Tags

Still have my dogtags, draft card (useless after I left the navy was 17 when I enlisted and got it after I came home), geneva convention card, some medals, and some pics. Best thing I still have was an ashtray made from a 5"54 shell casing. Heck they had the machine shop make ashtrays for all the officers. So next time they fired the 5"54's went on deck with a 32 gal trash can, asbestos gloves, and ear muffs. Those guns sure do bark. Spent a lot of watches sanding and polishing that puppy. Frank

I have all of mine. When I enlisted in the Army in 1967 the SOP was you received a service number indicating your status-enlistee, draftee, National Guard, Enlisted Reserve or Officer with letters at the beginning
indicating it as well (a ciuple of people I knew who received direct commissions said they received new SNs on commissioning.). In 1969 the SSAN became the service number, I have one pair with both numbers. A couple pairs in the PX issued plastic "silencers"-still with P-38s attached. (We weren't supposed to do that but everybody did.) In the Army we wore them all the time.
