dog thread

Great dogs, all, on this thread. Here's another of my faithful hunting dog Buck taken in 1984 when he was barely 1 yo on the back of a duckboat in Chincoteaque, VA.

One bitter cold day in Feb. my buddy and I went down to our goose farm to retrieve my camper. We let Buck run as we hooked up the trailer. Came time to leave and I gave a couple of blasts on the whistle and he came running, the good obedient dog he was. As he got nearer I noticed he was wet all over but every bit of water was frozen solid. What he did was to swim in the cow urine holding pond and he stunk like you know what. We put him in the cap and rode home with him like that. I'll never forget it.

I love this thread.

My best bud Parker who I lost a few months ago. One day he was fine and the next day a tumor ruptured on his heart. Still kills me and always will. Anyway here is a small tribute to the 12 amazing years I had with him:

I guess I am a sissy as my partner Rowdy was getting up ther in years and I dread the day that he will no longer be with me. Being selfish, I went out and got a puppy, which I don't think he appreciates. Ma Deuce, Deuce for short, has a lot of energy!

Nothing to be ashamed about in that motive. I did the same (with chucho the muppet) and I think it extended Parker's quality of life -- really energized him. I got franktown because I didn't want chucho to be bereft when the inevitable happened. I got zia because I accidentally wandered into a shelter :)

Great Thread!

Meet Amos:

We picked this guy up after our two GSD's passed on in the same year (ages 13.5 and 14 yrs). He was turned in as a stray so we don't really know his age or breed, but the Rottweiler is pretty evident. The other half maybe GSD, or Golden, we don't really know. Or, he may be a Hovawart ;)

I am a sucker for black and tan dogs. :)

I think you're right :)

That is one HAPPY looking dog. I swear dogs who have spent time in lockup never forget and just have a special bond with their forever humans.

Bless you for saving his life. ;)

Amos is a real lover of people, and almost always wants to be "in touch." My wife and I really loved our GSD's, but this guy is really affectionate by comparison, and they were affectionate dogs.

He'd been at the shelter 90 days with a couple of failed placements, so the folks there were thrilled when we took him home. He may have had a rough history, seems he is very reactive to other dogs. But we've been working on that since we got him, and he is way, way better than he was. Still a ways to go, though.

He's settled in pretty well. Here he is hanging out by the treat cabinet, using his powers of telepathy:

And sleeping in with Mom:

Dogs do make a house a home... unconditional love is hard to find elsewhere. ;)

Our first shorthair was Maggie=no pics on the PC. Followed by Buddy==the "Falstaff" of dogs.

All cojones and no brains. Diagnosed with 2 weeks to live with upper jaw cancer, he lived 5 more years and we think he was 22 or 23 when he finally went on. He appeared one day in our yard and never left.

No pictures of Abbie, our geriatic shorthair. Lost her to bone cancer. Adopted her at 12-she had a butt of birdshot in her from a previous owner. All except Maggie were "pound puppies"

Have you ever seen a long hair rotti? They are out there. They are. Genetic anomaly.

Really good looking dogs. Yours resembles them.

Our new foster!

Meet Jarina. She was (I believe) picked up as a stray. She got pulled from the shelter in the nick of time. She was preggo & was about to be PTS.

The 6 pups are healthy & are doing fine. She is a bit shy but warmed up really quickly. She is a love bug! :D

Here's one of Duffer, begging for attention, wondering why I stopped playing with him for a second.

I've been trying to get some updated pictures of Annie & Duffer but they are hard to photograph.
As soon as I try to take a picture they come running over for some lovin' and the photo op goes out the window.

Some say dogs don't have feelings, or that they don't have a "sixth sense" when something is wrong. I'd have to differ on those opinions. About 4 1/2 years ago, our old dog Jessie was suffering from a stroke/extreme dementia, and we had scheduled her for a final visit to the vet the next day. She finally managed to get some sleep, and we wrapped her in a blanket to keep her comfortable. Joe, our pit bull mix, who then was then still just a puppy, came over to her and gently placed his head on her. He knew that something was wrong with his buddy, and he did all he could to comfort her. You can just barely see it in the folds of the blanket, but Joe had brought her his favorite chew toy. He stayed close to her all that night.
