New to the forum want to say HI! I am retired military. Stronge supporter of the 2nd amend. Thank you to all that might shed some light on an issue I am having. I have a 681 in SS wonderful piece but there is an issue I am hoping someone can help me. When I cock the hammer , The hammer is level with the back strap. There is a 3/8 inch gap between the hammer and backstap. Weapon fires normal. Trigger feels good. But if I push a little harder on the hammer it goes to a second stop and now the hammer in nearly on the backstrap. The trigger also moves a little bit back further. It is like maybe a worn trigger or hammer and these parts feel like they are slipping past each other. I have 5 S&W's revolvers and none of them do this. Any body got an idea? I would appreciate it. I am retired machinist so tend to be mechanically inclined. I thought about replacing both trigger and hammer. What are your thoughts? Again thank you for your help in advance. If any info is needed please let me know. If this can be corrected without sending it to S&W that would be great!!

What you describe is not unheard of, but it is not right aand the gun should be looked at.

The first point is about where the hammer should fall when fired double-action. There could be some roughness on the hammer where the trigger contacts it to cam it back, and the trigger is simply catching on this. It cannot be depended on, and can be fixed with some very minimal and judicious stoning. The other option is some double-action dry-firing using snap caps, that should take care of it too.

If you bought the gun new, and dry-firing double-action doesn't cure it in short order, call S&W for a call tag and let them fix it. The service dept is usually very quick, generally less than 2 weeks total time, to get minor warrantee issues repaired and the gun back to you.

In the meantime, just be sure to pull the hammer back as far as it will go if you shoot it before it is repaired.

Thank you for the response. I I took the side plate off and watched the SA action. I see where the hammer "slips" past the cam for the trigger to be pulled back. If I exert a little more pressure on the hammer the slip occurs. I took a magnifying glass and saw that the hammer tip where it engages the trigger cam is not square. I checked around and found that this small tip should be square. This was a used gun. If you look at pictures in Magnum 500 posts there is an excellent picture of the engagement point of the hammer and trigger. Could a worn hammer and trigger cause this? This is a very very acurate and good looking gun. If it takes a a couple of new parts then I would be happy to install them. What are your thoughts. Thank you very much again Nutbustd Retired US Army
