The death toll on local roads was intense last year and shows no sign of slowing this year. Check out this list from the last few days.

This wreck with three bikers has us all scratching our heads unless there was another vehicle not mentioned/unknown.

The two loss of control wrecks at speed deserve little more than a shrug, especially for the confirmed seatbelt denier. Just glad no one else got hit.

As to clean records here, there's two plain reasons:

1) If you don't have a license or insurance, your record is clean;

2) Enforcement? Not so much.

Almost anyone in this state (Arkansas) can pass the drivers exam and
become a licensed driver. That doesn't mean a whole lot, if license gets
suspended/revoked that only means be a little more careful while driving.
They have no insurance, current tag or any of such nonsense, sort of

The wife and I drove to a restaurant about 5 miles from our house yesterday. Here is what we observed going and coming:

1. Red light runner, just as we were about to turn left in front of it 5 seconds after the light turned red.

2. Another car pulling across two-way traffic from a side street with an unexpected mad dash right in front of us.

3. A semi pulling out from a left hand turn lane at an intersection, turning right in front of the center lane of traffic.

4. Ditto to #2.

5. Three lanes of traffic. We are pulling into the left hand turn lane from the middle lane. A car from the middle lane pulled in front of us to get into the opposing traffic lane. We had to stop so fast we almost choked from the burning rubber smoke. Missed a broadside by that much.

At age 83, I'm glad I still have a fast reaction time - but it"s almost like automotive dodge ball out there!

Come to Boise. I am told it is not band here …….. yet.
I have lived here my whole life and yeah it is bad here. Everybody is now a drag racer. Intersection, two lanes at the light but the right lane merges into the left after the intersection. Always a race and the driver in the right lane is always mad when they don’t beat the drivers in the left lane and then force their way into the lane. Tailgating is now an Olympic event along with distracted driving (texting).
Add a bunch of illiterate rednecks (natives and long term residents) myself included, who are not accustomed to these new driving strategies and you have some splendid spectator sport.
Throw all of that into a road system that is woefully under sized for all the new drivers and vehicles and driving can be quite the adventure

In reply to LVSteve, it is my understanding that LVMPD (Metro) does not concern itself with moving violations, rather simply responds to accidents. Then again, one rarely sees a police vehicle on Vegas roads. One Metro cop told me just 6 units patrolled the south eastern quadrant with Sunset bordering on the north and the Strip on the west. Strangely, he said that was plenty!

Ladder13 cites texting as one of 3 major causes of accidents. I agree, but wonder what one could be texting about behind the wheel when one has the brain of an amoeba... Inquiring minds want to know.

From personal observation there is only 1 offense that needs a $1000 fine or 15 days in jail. ANY use of Any Device while operating Any vehicle. Needs to be vigorously Enforced.
Yesterday a buddy and I went to St Augustine to eat at O’Steens. Line of traffic waiting to go over Bridge of Lions. Light turns green and some ignorant, rude, self centered individual sat at green light on some device causing 6-8 vehicles to miss green light. Someone blew horn, cretin looked up as light turned Red and blew through red light. Realize LEOs have lots to deal with but this use of devices while operating vehicles needs to STOP. BTW, last night on 17 some guy was boozed up or had a death wish as he was going North bound in the South bound lane. Head on with truck. He was DRT and truck driver to hospital.

See those folks all the time, so easy to spot. Light changes and they sit there, then run it.

As far as the drunk goes, I care not one bit about him/her/them, only about the lives they ruin every single day.
Hanging in the public square would suffice anyone drinking and driving.

At an intersection it is yield right unless there is a timing issue then both people end up trying to wave the other guy to go first. We only got 4 lights and I have yet to see anyone run one and between 10pm and 6 am they just flash. Might be 5 0r 6 44 way stops around town too. Almost nobody wears a seat belt in town. Cops don't ticket for that. There are a couple narrow bridges across the creeks. One or the other drivers will yield to the other, by no specific rule. Funny when you both stop, try to out wait the other guy then play stop start. If 2 rigs are stopped in the road with the drivers talking they will move when you get there unless its important, then might have to wait a few seconds. Heavy traffic is 5 or 6 cars at the main and first stop light. If your trying to turn out of the store parking lot they generally leave a hole and wait for you.

If your a jerk driver around here everyone will know you and your rig in short order. The people at the grocery store, gas stations, hardware store know your rig and your name. Why be a jerk and what is the big hurry? You slide off the road, someone will pull you out, mess up a bit and they will kid you. Do NOT be a jerk.

There is no taxi, during the week days there is a shuttle you can call for a ride for $1.50 and it will add you to a haphazard scheduled to pick up and drop you off.

The bar crowd are on their own, but after 10pm there is almost nobody out and I have came to the conclusion that if they behave and drive straight home they mostly get ignored, because the only DUIs I see are from people reporting drunks during the day.

As I have said before I live in a whole different world than most people.

Most states with lots of folks from out of town have problems. They do not know the area(read they are lost) and they bring their bad habits with them.

Here in Florida, we get them by the boat load (actually do come in by boat from the south). Driving in the winter here is taking your life in your own hands, much better in the summer when all the 'birds go home.

A friend from Pa. tells me all the time that they are growing another crop of bad drivers/Snowbirds for us.

We definitely have more deer than people in my large in area but small in population town. Someone blinks lights most times its deer/s not a cop ahead warning! That holds true except for the summer weekends and then we get overrun with flatlanders. (What the price of gas is going to do is open for debate)

Traffic lights, (red, yellow, green,) what are they, we have none in the town. A couple intersections we do have a flashing yellow&red as many people think STOP signs are just a suggestion. It is possible without driving a zigzag route to go over 24 miles before you hit a Red Green Yellow traffic light!

Cops hardly see one up here we are way at the edge of the county for the sheriffs and almost dead center between State Police stations.

Since covid and protest here in Texas, since most large cities will not back the blue, many police have stopped writing tickets in protest. The best thing you can do is have a bigger vehicle than the other driver.

I do believe it as a rally attendee for many years.I also appreciate the hospitality of the SD people. Years ago, before cell phones I had a breakdown on the way back from Devils Tower and was able to get back to civilization with the help of young man with a truck. He was going to Wyoming state on a rodeo scholarship. Nice young man who came over to the see what the rally was all about. A real cowboy. He would not accept money, but since was only 20, to young to buy beer, I set him up for the help.

I have said for decades that it's too darn easy to get a drivers license in the US. At minimum, the ability to drive in wet and/or snow should mandatory. As is changing a tire.

The really sad part is that all the electronic nannies being mandated simply enable the clueless.
