Driver's License Expiring

A difficult decision for sure. I had to take the keys away from my mother at 90, and she still talks about driving. I agree, either renew your license or get a state ID. If it means anything, the ID will probably be a bit cheaper.

Happy birthday!!

I will be 85 the 15 of this month also, driver's license renewal required at this time frame. Usually the time of the license is four years. The new one I received being free starting at the age of 65 is for 8 years, 2013!

This coming Saturday is my birthday. I will be 88. My Driver's
License will expire the same day. I don't think I will renew it.
I have had a couple of driving close calls. My thoughts and
reactions are not as prompt as they once were. Thankfully
I have family members who take me wherever I need to go.

Sorry to hear, but I am glad you recognize when to say when. My father-in-law didn't until one night he was driving south in the northbound lane of a local road, wiping out mailboxes. Local police took his license.

I don't envy my son when the day comes he has to tell dad it's time to give up the keys. I hope I am as sensible as you are when that day arrives.

If you ever plan to fly anywhere you will need one, especially one of the "True I.D." ones. There are also various other times when you need I.D. and the Drivers License is the universally accepted one.

Renew it while you are able, but you don't have to use it to actually drive. I'm soon turning 82, and have been having some of those same thoughts. I don't drive at night if possible. I tend to stay away from busy 4 lane (or greater) streets. I don't drive on any trips over 30-40 miles away. It's no fun this aging process.

My compliments on making a difficult but wise and altruistic decision.
Happy Birthday!
I believe most states issue official ID cards that look very much like a DL and are good for official ID use.

Not an easy decision to make. Perhaps a good physical is in order, you might have a condition you are not aware of. Medications ?
I just had my first eye exam in 20 years-! (I am 73). Amazing how much
sharper every looks.
I don't like driving at night as much as I used to. Roads more crowded, these LED or whatever lights are too bright IMHO. Then there's the drinkers, the druggies, cell phone users, etc.
