Alright, had a real cool experience, and all by total co-incidence. In my effort to chose between the S&W (Performance Center 1911) and the Dan Wesson/CCO, I wanted to get the CCO in my hands, to gauge the feel, fit, …etc. I already knew how the S&W felt in my hands, and loved it. I called every store possible (approx 16 of them). Much to my surprise, I found a store that had one! I headed out to the store immediately. Upon getting there… there was this pure moment of what I would like to call 'drool factor'….. when I looked inside the retail show case, where the CCO lay… lo and behold, right next to it, was the Ed Brown Special Forces Edition, and next to that was a Wilson Combat CQB!
I know what you are thinking..and yes! The answer is yesss!... I decided to feel out each one of them, and dry fire each one of them, and in all sincerity, despite price points being different, I was seriously entertaining any possibility of acquiring the best 'match' for me, my hand, …basically 'fit, form and function'.
I have to say, that after 'feeling' each one out, holding, aiming, 'basic maneuvering' …etc… the CCO and CQB were better fit than the Special Forces. The Special Forces is a beautiful piece, and I'm sure functions superbly, but in my hands, and in my anatomy, the CCO and CQB were the contenders. After much back and forth, a conclusive decision was made….and the winner was the CCO! Again, this is based on my anatomy/fit/handling/feel.
The CCO fit perfectly, the Officer sized frame was perfect for my hand, and the butt also was perfectly long enough to where it ended in synchrony with my hand….and yes that's the one I opted buying.
From the photos I had seen, I felt I may need to get slimmer grips; since the wood grips looked thicker and sort of had a swell to them. However, after holding the piece yesterday, the 'swelling'/bulge in the wood grips is ergonomically perfect, to where it sits very well inside the hand, and allows the hand to grip (hug) it well.
Btw... the front strap and mainspring housing 'scalloped' checkering on the CCO is the same as the one on the Ed Brown Special Forces gun. I also learnt that over 50% of the parts and machinery used in the CCO are Ed Brown parts.
I'm a happy camper… and can't wait to take it out to the range!
