This morning I woke up to about a foot of snow and it's still coming down hard! My wife has been after me to level our relatively new Whirlpool Refrigerator and since I can't go anywhere today, I sort of got shamed into doing it. Not that I mind doing work - just don't like laying on the floor to do it.

Anyway, I needed a flashlight to see what I was doing under the Fridge and I asked my wife to grab a 3-D Cell Maglite. I push the button - DEAD! I said OK, get the one in the garage (same model), barely lit up! Now I'm getting po'd so I asked her to grab the one in the Utility Room (2 cell Maglite)- that one lit up but was dull as Hell!

Anyway I finished leveling the Fridge and opened up all the Flashlights - tested all the batteries on my Simpson 260 Meter - all weak to dead. Then I looked at the date on the batteries and they all read "good till 2028" (shelf life) however I barely use these flashlights. Seriously, 3 different lights in 3 different locations - so I'm laying the blame on Duracell! I have had these Maglites for 35 or 40 years and I know they should last idle longer than 2 years.

I simply can't believe that all 8 D-cells all went bad in 2 years of basically sitting idle. I think I'll have to write Duracell a nasty letter. Has anyone else here noticed that Duracell D Cells are not lasting as long as they state on the battery?

I disposed of all my Duracell batteries a couple of years ago. They leak too much, even when they're in the unopened package. I've lost three flashlights and two game cameras to that junk and would never consider them again.

I still use Duracell batteries but had a bad experience about two years ago when I ended up buying some bogus Duracells from a big box store in a 24 pack. They said Duracell but had very tiny Chinese writing on them, almost too small to read. They were junk.
I didn't notice it until long after I bought them.

I have an Energizer rechargeable, PMTRL8.
Prolly a ion type/ quick charge. Great.

My little Protec ... that I keep in the JEEP's consol, drains low with Duracell.
I just changed the AA to a plain Jane Energizer MAX,
VOILA & much brighter now.

Just my personal observation. In the past I didn't really take notice of what brand of batteries I bought....usually Duracell or Energizer. But over the last couple of years I've noticed that the Duracells just don't last very long. The Energizers seem to have a much greater lifespan.

So now I pay attention to what I'm buying ........... no more Duracells.

I gave up on Mag lights years ago. I still have several three 3D cells, but I store them unloaded. Most of my flashlights are small and use rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Much brighter than any mag light, and the batteries hold charge for very long time. And most importantly, they don't leak. Fenix, Quark, 4 Sevens, and Olight have been good brands for me. Mostly have Olights now.

I have had Duracell ruin flashlights and openers in the last couple years. Neighbors had a remote get so hot the other day they almost could not pick it up and it was Duracell batteries in it so hot they could not be touched once the back was opened up. No more copper tops for me!

Thats why I buy the energizer lithium ion batteries.

There are a lot of phony Duracell batteries out there. Google has a lot of info on them. I got mine from Amazon. (they did refund my money)

Exactly Paul. Unfortunately counterfeit batteries are as common as lots of other fake products anymore. Batteries are just the tip of the iceberg.

So what is the best flashlight and what are the best batteries? Inquiring minds want to know!
Nitecore, thrunite, fenix, surefire, streamlight.

Any of the aforementioned are good lights. I prefer the 18650 rechargeable batteries as opposed to the 2 cr123 batteries.

But the cr 123 batteries are brighter but don't last as long in my experience.

The cheapest budget light is a energizer 700 lumen tactical light. I have it mounted on my mossberg 20 gauge and it runs on double a batteries and is a bad *** light for 20.00.
