I plan on looking at a 586 with an 8 3/8 barrel on Saturday. Looks good in photo's. Owner mentioned "400" hammer and "500" trigger?? No idea what that means. Also what should I be looking for and any idea how scarce the 8 3/8 barrel is and a value? Has the cylinder drag line. Thanks.

I believe the seller is referring to the width of the trigger and the hammer. I thought all 586/686 came with what is commonly referred to as a Cobat hammer. Smooth and not near .500 wide more like .300. I may be mistaken thought the 8 3/8" guns may have that trigger/hammer setup. I have 6" and 4" variants

I don't see the 8 3/8 586 very often and expect the 5s and 6s are more in demand. Might be worth a premium if it is as new and with the original box/etc. Very nice 4 inch 586s, blue and nickel, without boxes have been selling for $1k or so where I shop. . . .when you can find one.

I believe Ippd4 is correct about 586/686 all coming with a combat-width hammer and trigger.
I think the trigger has been replaced with the wider .500" target trigger, and the hammer with a .400" wide target hammer.

I did similar on my 686-5, replacing the black MIM parts with a .400 stainless trigger and wide Power Customs hammer.

Bought it in good condition with original case and papers for $738 in Oct '24.

Thanks. No paper, no box/case.

Thanks. Does the "400" hammer and "500" trigger sound original or is it an upgrade?

If they are upgrades, they are good ones if you plan on bulls eye single shot fun!

My 6 inch came with the .312 inch smooth combat trigger ( preferred for double action fun) and the basic service hammer.
I upgraded to the .5 inch target hammer and soon to the .5 inch target trigger. I don't shoot double action.

They are a great choice and shooting 38 is like shooting 22. Very easy to shoot hundreds of rounds. The 8” are not as valuable as the 4 or 6”
