I have a paramedic who is a friend in Louisiana. Some years back he responded to an Ostrich attack on a farm.
An elderly couple was raising Ostriches for market and the male got mad at them for an unknown reason.
He killed the husband outright and mauled the wife so badly that she died shortley after getting to the hospital.
When my friend went back to talk to the deputies he found out that they had put the bird down when it attacked them. There were three or four deputies on scene, I forget which.
They shot the bird with .40 S&W and 12 gauge rounds and finally killed it, but it was within 10 feet of them when it dropped.
They are big, ornery, and have really sharp claws and beaks.
I saw that, but an emu, a cassowary, and an ostrich are all different birds. Add the rhea.
All can be dangerous, but the Cassowary has the worst reputation for attacking humans.I'm not surprised that this would happen.
I don't know how these various huge birds taste. I know that people do eat ostrich eggs. They don't serve them at IHOP because the one egg wouldn't leave room on the plate for the rest of your Rooty, Tooty, Fresh, and Fruity breakfast...![]()

I know the difference between the big birds. I also nailed an Emu with one shot from my Ruger Red Label 12 Gauge at the request of the property owner. Emu tastes like USDA Select Round Steak. Not great meat, but it's not a natural critter around my part of the globe either.
The cassowary is a "large, flightless bird most closely related to the emu," according to the San Diego Zoo. It can run up to 31 mph through dense underbrush, jump almost 7 feet into the air and is a skilled swimmer, so it can deftly fend off threats, the zoo says.
They can grow more than 5 feet tall and the heaviest females can weigh more than 160 pounds, the zoo says. Males weigh up to 120 pounds.
"The cassowary is rightfully considered the most dangerous bird in the world!" the zoo says. "Each 3-toed foot has a dagger-like claw on the inner toe that is up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) long! The cassowary can slice open any predator or potential threat with a single swift kick."
I wonder how many bags of stuffing you would need.Fire up the pit, pass the sauce.
Yeah, Australia sure is a dangerous place with killer birds and deadly Koalas.
