I just mentioned Ernest Hemingway is another thread. I just thought of a NM Hemingway connection that I will pass on.
Going West of Albuquerque on old Highway 66 you get to the Laguna Indian Reservation. Just past there is a pop of deeded land. Remember out west huge amounts of the land are owned by the Feds, the states and the Indians. When you see that beer sign near a reservation that usually always means private deeded dirt.
And sitting there on old 66 for all to see is the Casa Blanca, the White House. It's looks a lot like the old country stores out in the country where I was raised. Once I was thumbing through a picture book about Route 66. They said that Ernest Hemingway once hid out at the Casa Blanca and wrote part of The Old Man and The Sea there. Papa was known to hide from his publishers, wife, ex wives etc.
That way be could concentrate on drinking and writing without distractions. He would lie to his publisher and say 'I have the first 5 chapters finished, please wire me $10,000'. As soon as he got the money he would disappear.
The Casa Blanca had rooms for rent back then. This scenario is disputed by some Hemingway researchers. The folks at the Casa Blanca say it's true. But when somebody disappears, who's to say?
