Every guy whipped out their knives!

Many of us are old enough to remember carrying knives to school. In elementary school, we lived for the day when the teacher would need a bundle of books cut open or a 16mm film re-spliced.

In Hight School, it seemed that part of the unofficial "uniform for all males students was a Buck folder in a leather belt sheath (except on ROTC uniform days, when you would have to settle for a SAK in the pocket to avoid a gig).

My knife carrying started at age ten with a cheap Barlow knife from the hardware store. Have carried one regularly since. More for the utility and handiness than as a self defense tool. This is my current EDC rotation. Selection varies by mood and the day's agenda.

There is a saying: "Mora and Opinel. All else is vanity". That is a proposition you can argue with, but there is still a lot of truth to it. For a lot of us, all the cutting you will ever need to do can be handled with a couple of knives costing less than twenty bucks apiece.

That said, I have found knives to be a lot of fun, and have chosen to indulge my vanity, to the tune maybe a hundred, possibly as many as two hundred knives. Who's counting?

Still, the ones I carry are in the first photo, the Alox Electrician, and the barely recognizable Opinel no.6. I haven't carried the Okapi Biltong very much lately. I always have the little ChannelLocks, too. They pretty much render a multi-tool unnecessary. If I need to carry a fixed blade, I will probably drop a Mora into a front pocket. They don't weigh very much.

I carry a Swiss Army Knife that I bought so long ago the Model emblem has worn off totally. It has among its tools a toothpick, corkscrew, scissors and file.

I never thought of myself as a knife collector until I decided to put all of my knives togther in one of the safes and I was absolutely astounded as to how many knives I had, particularly the number of Punxsutawney Phil folders.

I've carried this CRKT for over a year now, and if I lost it, I'd replace it immediately with an identical model. It's my favorite EDC knife and I use it every day. The Kabar is the knife it replaced:

I clip a Kershaw Scamp inside the pocket of my jeans whenever I head out of the house. If I am just staying around the house it is a Kershaw Launch 4 auto clipped inside the pocket. I found a Kershaw Leek on the road a few years back that had been pretty abused. A bit of work with the wire brush on the grinder as well as some time with medium and fine crock sticks brought it back to life and it is my garage knife.

Preach on!

Three years ago this cheapie switchblade was given me by Absent Comrade misswired. I have carried it almost every day since. It gets a workout and the jobs done.

I actually carry two knives ever day. One is a regular pocket knife (usually a Spyderco Delica K390 or a Marbles large Stockman (Gladstone, MI, USA) and the other is a mini Key Chain size Swiss Army Knife so I have a scissors, nail file, small screwdriver, toothpick and tweezers as well as the almost useless 1" blade. The blade itself is not why I carry it- lol.

Same here ^^^^^^
Benchmade folder left pocket Victorinox in the right side coin pocket. I wear a vest almost all the time in the winter and usually there is a knife in the vest pocket also. Cant imagine leaving the house without a knife,

Dad gave me my 1st knife when I was five or six years old with the admonishment of "Don't cut towards yourself Boy!". He also showed me the proper way to open and close it as well as how to sharpen and maintain it.
That was near 66 years ago. If I'm wearing pants (All pants have pockets - right?), I ALWAYS have at least one knife on me and it's usually two - but sometimes more (depends on the anticipated day's activities!). I feel positively naked without at least one of my pocketknives!
I still remember my friends proudly showing new knives throughout grades 1 thru 12. Can't do that anymore!
Folding and belt knives have far more uses than for defense.

Well now, my father told me just the opposite - " always cut toward yourself, that way if it slips you'll only cut yourself".
As you can see, Dad and I were real close!

I "tactical" carry a single blade folder. I carry my edc handgun on my right side and a Kershaw single blade folder clipped in my left pocket for defensive purposes. This knife is solely for self-defense. If I am unable to use my right hand to get to my handgun say being in a fight I can draw my folder with my left hand and start slicing and dicing. The folder will unlikely cause serious injury but will inflict enough pain on my attacker to cause him to release my right hand and arm enough to draw my handgun.

All of us who carry a blade use it for all sorts of chores. I told my wife I am about to also carry my own fork. I am tired of sitting down at some "eating establishment" and being given a plastic knife and fork and spoon to enjoy when eating my meal. And sometimes the fork is a flimsy, wimpy, flexible tiny thing. And the spoon isn't even big enough to stir a cup of coffee.

The other day, at a burger place, I told her I was putting my own little shaker of seasoning in the car, so I could flavor my burger and fries with something without having to tear open a half dozen tiny paper envelopes, and try to get the pepper flakes to actually land on my meal. And since I am a Buffalo hot sauce lover, I now ask for extra little sealed containers of that sauce when we go thru the Chick Fil A drive through.

I am about to set up my own little portable condiment/utensel carry case to keep in the car.

I just turned '76, and am going "...to do it my way..."

Be careful reading this kind of thread! Once you start buying knives, it is a slippery slope, worse than guns! :D

I carry a Leatherman Wave in its sheath on my belt. Very handy size. I tried a Surge, but it was just too heavy for everyday.

Then I made the mistake of watching Texas Tool Crib on YouTube, and became convinced I also need a Leatherman Free in my pocket because you don't want to pull out the Wave for minor little cutting jobs, simple multi-tool stuff, etc. It clips to the front pocket so it isn't banging around down there with the keys.

Finally, I acquired a little Gerber folder that fits just fine in my cheap Costco jeans watch pocket. I carry it for the times I only need a single little blade.

I don't know how many other knives I have laying around that I just had to buy and try. I should probably sell most of them, plus that big heavy Surge, in the Forum Classifieds. :D

I used to carry the Benchmade "Mini Griptilian" until I saw the replacement cost. Now I carry a $10 "gunshow flipper" and I have a spare when I lose it. Joe

I have always carried a knife. One of the church elders gave all the boys the small basic Victornox Swiss Army knives at our confirmation. She said a gentleman always has a knife. That has always stuck with me.
Now I carry a Guardian Tactical OTF. Some people look at these and the more glamorous Microtec knives as a gimmick. I can say using one hand to open and close is so handy I wish I had done it long ago.

Can't remember not carrying a folding knife...... I can remember which knife back to 1978.... for the last 8/10 years it's been a Benchmade 2.9" Northfork.

A kershaw Blur when out in the field...... my field utility knife is a K-bar MarkI Navy with a 5" blade

Collecting classic American made antique folders, the goal in to find pristine examples. However, there are some well used knives and guns that just call to me. I have one in particular that draws my attention and admiration. It is a Case XX stag handled trapper from the 1950's. Stag is one of the hardest natural materials for scales. Lots of bumps and valleys. This particular knife has been well used but properly sharpened with the blade with worn @1/3 away from use. The stag scales on the other hand are worn smooth. It has been carried in a pocket for so long it no longer has the bumps and valleys. Makes me wonder what grand adventures, could it talk, could it tell. More than that I would like to have all the pocket change that shared a pocket with the knife to make it look this way.

Yep I agree knives can be addictive. So many to choose from for various usage. The new Sog Trident AT-XR appealed to me along with a Buck Alpha folder for EDC recently after looking at various makes and models for at least a month. Now a fixed blade for EDC is on my mind.
