I have noticed a few mentions of adding a piece of a single edge razor blade over the blast shield on 329PD's to help extend the life of the blast shield. Has anyone ever done it? What would be a good option for attaching it, JB or epoxy? In my thinking, if you could attach it and still be able to get under a corner of it, you would be able to replace it as it almost burned through and never have to worry about sending your revolver back to Smith if you actually shot it to any extent.

Of course the razor blade may not withstand the blast to any useful extent. I suppose I could cut a piece and attach it to my OM Super as a test. The finish is pretty rough as is so it wouldn't hurt much to try it.

Any other thoughts on this, besides hope like hell it stays in place and doesn't fly back into your face!

I've extended the life of my 329PD's top strap shield by applying enuf J-B Weld to the line that is formed by the eroding powder gases. I've applied it only once, and so far it has held up quite well. Prior to that I had sent my 329PD back twice in the first 3 years to have the top strap shield replaced.

I've posted about this before, so a SEARCH should turn up more info and comments.

JB Weld is epoxy, along with a filler. "Blast" and "epoxy" don't go well together. The enemy of epoxy is heat. "Blast" is made up of heat and pressure. Just shoot it!

JB weld has a wide variety of products. Some suitable for water, some cold, some engines some high heat.

The high temp JB weld worked for me in an car application.

Are replacement blast shields not available from S&W?

The blast shield replacement requires that the barrel be removed. Most folks aren't equipped to do that. If you are, I would think Smith would gladly ship you blast shields, but you may have to pay for them.
I've had mine back to Smith twice for blast shield replacement and both times the turn around time was less than 2 weeks. No cost to me either.
Since I applied some J-B Weld to the "cut" in the blast shield, I've not had to send mine back. I wish I knew how many rounds have been thru it since I did that, but I don't.
