I bought an M&P FS 9 or the wife a month or so ago.
I am so impressed with the weight, handling and general ergo's that I ordered me the 5" pro.
In reading too much about the pistols on varying sites, there is always one concern (complaint/ issue) that comes up. That's the front F/O sight coming lose.

Is this a "common" problem, or is it just a lucky few that have this trouble?

Can I eventually look forward to this issue also?
Should I degrease the dovetail area and put a drop of locktite under the dovetail ?

Should there be a course of action taken as a preventative?

Thanks,
Eric

I have never had a sight come loose in the dovetail. I have broke the tubes on occasion and keep extra tubing to replace them with, not a big deal if they do break as you still have the base for a outline.

It will either be good to go or it won't. Don't mess with it if you don't have to.

I try to buy all my M&P's in person. That way I can check for loose sights.

there are stories of loose Pro F/O front sites all over the net. i saw a brand new one that had it with my own eyes.

you have 2 options. Send it back to SW and they should fix it.

peen the bottom of the site and reinstall it

SW QC is terrible with Pro F/O sites

So I guess I'll just have to "cross the bridge" when I come to it.
I was hoping for some way to avoid the possibility.

If you are talking about the base itself then by all means put some green or red loctite on it and it will be fine. If you are talking about the FO itself, then put a drop of instant glue or clear nail polish a the base of the fiber on the sides. It will not come out then.

I was actually referring to the dovetail bases on the front sight.
And the reports of them drifting right or left at the most in-opportune times, willy-nilly and on their own.

I have had both happen on my 5 inch Pro. The FO broke & I replaced it. Takes a .060 or .059 diameter FO. :)

Before that happened the whole front sight fell out. :( I tried the locktite solution & the sight moved around. Then someone suggested I wrap the front sight in a sandwich bag then tap the sight back in. And remove the rest of the bag. Worked great.

The rest of the story is: I replaced front and rear sight with Dawson Precision adjustable rear and FO front. :p Works greater.

Apparently the loose sight syndrome is not an isolated problem. The rear site on my M&P was so loose it would fall out in either direction, with only the locking set screw to hold it in place. Question is whether it is the sight or the dovetail which is the problem. Contact S&W (which I did) and they will be very helpfull and will issue a return authorization and prepaid label to return the gun to them (Fed-X) and they will correct the problem and get it back to you. They sent me the prepaid return label for mine, but I haven't sent it in yet. I'm going to try and determine where the fault lies first. It it's the dovetail I'll probably send it in,but if it's only the sight I may not as I intend to put David Bowie'/
Ameriglo Operator night sights on in any event. Minor inconvenience, good luck and enjoy a great firearm!

the front sight of my brand new M&P 40 fell out on the very first range trip. luckily it was lying right by the gun. must have fallen out when i laid the gun down...otherwise zero problems.
