Tell me about the guarantee on S&Ws in general. When did it start etc?

My 27-2 3.5 shooter needs work.

When I point the barrel to the floor the cylinder will rotate, when it is pointed to the ceiling it will not. Who knows what else needs work if Bubba the gunsmith worked on this gun.

What are the chances that there will still be a guarantee on this poor baby?

Thanks for any info.

Joe

Good morning Trolley, Sounds like a broken hand spring to me, should be a simple repair. :D

If It Breaks.................I'll be Darned..............

Warranty on revolvers is one year from original purchase date. (I looked at a manual on S&W's site) Seemed to me it would be the same as the M&P line which is lifetime. Might be worth a call to the warranty center and see what they say. Wouldn't hurt to ask. ;)

Your 3-1/2" Model 27 has been out of production for 20 years or more. My recollections of the time are that the factory warranty was for a period of one years, extended only to the original purchaser, and any modifications to the revolver voided any and all warranty coverage.

I agree that the most likely culprit for your problem is the hand spring. Current production N-frame hand springs should work just fine. Changing one out (by an experienced person) takes no more than about 20 minutes (most of which is spent on disassembly and reassembly), no special tools required, so the repair cost is likely to be no more than parts cost and gunsmith's minimum for shop labor.

The "internals" of a S&W revolver can accumulate a considerable amount of crud and sludge over years of use, so this would be an excellent time to have the interior of the frame and internal parts thoroughly cleaned and properly lubricated, adding perhaps another 20 minutes to the job (although many reputable gunsmiths would do this as a matter of course when performing such a repair).

I was able to get the right person on the phone and a spring for the hand will be shipped out free of charge.

Thanks for the help! :D

Joe - your experience coincides with my own communications and service from Smith & Wesson Customer Service. I asked specifically about subsequent ownership and the warranty and was informed that "S&W stands behind the gun and not the owner".

They have always assisted me with my older S&W revolvers. I hope that this policy continues, and that it also reflects the actual experiences of the other forum members.
