Picked this Heavy Duty 38spl barrel up off Ebay a few days ago. Why because it was cheap, and last time I needed one for a project took more than a few months to fine one. Auction pictures weren't the best, but good enough to buy it. I had guessed it was a pull off, but now not sure no serial number, and machining marks are present sharp edges, and a thick front sight make me think otherwise. Bore is like a mirror. Any thoughts....?

Sounds like leftover inventory from when they quit making those. They probably didn't finish ones that wouldn't be used, and just left them on a shelf or in a drawer until they got sold off with other similar parts.

Your barrel might be part of an old heist that happened back in the 1960s. A truck load of parts left the factory back then and they are still showing up over 60 years later. I believe it was a project initiated by Bill Orr, if I have the name right. He had found out that the factory was doing a major house cleaning and negotiated a purchase of all the left-over parts. Everything ended up getting sold and some in large lots to other retailers. Most all barrels, frames, cylinders, etc. were in-the-white.

Almost 10 years ago, I ran across a supply of single shot barrels offered by Propperts and none were serial numbered. All were in- the-white and I bought a couple. It was thought that they were in that truck load of parts and ultimately found their way to Propperts.

Numrich sold those both 38sp HD and 38sp HD Outdoorsman bbl's for quite a few yrs.
In the White, roll marked, needed final polishing.
I've bought several of both over time from them.
I think I still have at least one or two of each left for future projects.

They still show the Outdoorsman bbl's
Barrel, .38 S&W Spec, 6-1/2", Ribbed, New, Unused (Marked .38 Spec) | Gun

But I don't see them listing the HD/Mod 20 bbl's anymore

added..
FWIW,,They still have 22/32 NOS in-the -white bbls.
I've used a couple of those in the past . They came in handy.
Still have one in the shop.

Looks very much like these.

I have a few spare parts and I like to put them to good use - lol. The Chief's Special barrel is just threaded in to the block of wood and if ever needed (which I doubt) can just be unscrewed. The K Frame cylinder has been temporarily attached as well and can always be taken off with no damage if needed.
