I may be behind on this "news" but I had understood that forged hammers and triggers were not available from the factory. However, I have now learned that no parts for pre-MIM models are available from the factory. How long has this been the case? Will the factory make no repairs to the pre-MIM revolvers?

I would not assume that though certain parts are not available in the over-the-counter parts network that there are none in-house for service and repairs

I expect as S&W transitioned to MIM parts, they no longer made or sourced forged steel parts, so once the supply of forged steel parts has been exhausted, MIM parts are the only ones available. I don't think S&W has ever been big on selling parts to individuals, but they have sold excess parts inventory to companies like Numrich Gun Parts Corp.

S&W has phased out forged parts a long time ago. What they don't sell or use in-house they usually auction off to parts houses like Numrich. They no longer support older made guns with original replacement parts.

Luckily you can still find parts online, ebay, LGS, swap meets, shows, etc. and some are still as- new or unused. Just proceed cautiously when buying anything online of course.

There are also a couple of after market company's making some parts for discontinued revolvers, although I don't know anyone making Hammers and Triggers yet. If there become a large demand they just might one day. Unfortunately, the forging process seems to be waning in favor of casting which is cheaper and easier.

Sometimes S&W declines repair work on older guns because if they loose or break something they are not capable of repairing or replacing the part. They simply don't want the liability with no parts available to pick from.

When I owned and operated my Company we repaired anything with our name on it! If the exact march wasn't available we would repair or custom make a piece - but we were not huge like S&W is.

Lots of the MIM parts will interchange with forged parts. But, it isn't a bad idea to pick up a spare hammer or 2 for each frame size, a couple extra triggers, some center pins, etc and have them standing by. I have a couple plastic containers that are divided up in bins full of action parts, sights, etc.

Thanks all for your responses. I actually have a few spares left over from the 70's era (hands, sears, springs, screws, extractor rods/center pin, nose & rivets, etc.) that could commonly wear or become damaged. I will start treating those as gold ......
