S&W made a few pairs of target stocks for both N and K frames using birds eye maple. The pair shown on the 29-2 below was purchased in the recent Amoskeag Auction. Click on the photo for a better look.

Love the look on that blued long tube 44.

Congrats and thanks for sharing,

I've never seen a pair of those in my life and I've been around a long time. Those are really neat.

Don...I did purchase a set of carved stocks with ivory inlays around the escutcheon and nut by Alvin White.

Bill, those are stunning! How does a person tell the difference between those made by S&W, and those that are not?

outstanding !! Birdseye Maple has a very unique grain when cut properly.
I don't think you could have picked a better gun to put them on either.

Bill, your new grips look awesome.
Did S&W make factory grips using the "out of the ordinary" woods for engraved guns only or could anybody request a "special" wood?

Did they ever use the "special" woods for aftermarket grips that came in the blister packs?

The wood used for stocks in blister packs I have seen are Goncalo alves, walnut, and a few in rosewood. Many engraved guns have smooth stocks made of Goncalo alves or rosewood. I am sure you could request stocks made of special wood up through the mid-60s, and possibly after that.

Stocks made of birds eye maple have always been rare as S&W made very few pairs.

I'd be curious as well about how many of these factory Birdseye Maple stocks S&W made... mine have the black stock circles (washers). I found them many, many years ago on eBay and had not seen many other since then.

These are on a M544... 5" barrel N-Frame, hands down... my favorite barrel configuration.
