Favorite grips for double action shooting

Small hands here. Way back I got a Ruger DA with the skimpy standard stocks. Couldn't hang onto the darn thing and was about ready to dump it. Craig Spegel whittled me out a set of stocks out of teakwood for it; full size stocks extending to about 1/2" below the butt, minus the finger grooves, smooth Tru-Oil finish. The shape is a lot like the old GP-100 grip, just a bit smaller. I sort of standardized on that pattern for Rugers and Smiths. Everyone who has handled them, no matter what their actual hand size, liked them. I don't think he ever carried them as a catalogued item.

I like the nylon Hogue Monogrips as an economical utility stock. They're a bit long but you can really crank down on them, and the finger grooves actually fit me.

Never cared for Goodyears, plus they drag on clothing when carrying concealed. (Ugly, too.)

I really like the uncle mike RB jp-frame boots. Due to a lack of k-frames in my inventory, I never tried the uncle mike 3-finger k-frame grips, # 59005 & 59006, but I bet I'd like them. Bill Davis used to make a similar grip in both small & large sizes for the K/L frame, sold by Brownells.

Hi all,

I'm glad this thread came up. I have a wonderful S&W 67-1 that came with the Pachmayr Presentation grips that covered the backstrap. My hands are too small for those, so I got a pair of the Professional Grippers that left the backstrap uncovered.

Those are better, but still not quite right. I just finished reading Grant Cunningham's The Book of the Revolver, which deals almost exclusively with shooting double action. Cunningham goes into good detail on choosing the best grips for one's hands. After reading the book, I looked closely at my grip.

I find that the Grippers push my middle finger too far below the space behind the trigger guard. This increases the angle for my trigger finger so it pulls slightly up and back rather than straight back. Also, my grip ends up shifted just a bit so that the backstrap is on closer toward the base joint of my thumb rather than the web.

Given all of this, I took off the grips to see how everything lined up. To my great relief, everything is nearly perfect. Naturally, I need a little material to fill my palm and make the grip a little broader. But the revolver is perfectly in line with my forearm with the backstrap in the web of my hand and my trigger finger resting on the trigger at the first joint. There is just a little space behind the trigger guard to fill. The trigger pull is straight back.

The upshot is that I'll probably end up whey many of you are: with Magna grips and a Tyler T-grip. I had a T-grip on an old Detective Special and liked it very much. I'll be ordering as soon as my tax refund arrives. :)

Regards,
-Drew
