Favorite handgun caliber for carry?

Most carried is my shield in 9mm or my M&P340 in my pocket but my all time favorite is still a 1911 in .45. I own no mouse guns but do have several larger revolvers that are taken when camping of hiking in the mountains.

I tend to decide right before I leave the house. Yesterday it was 9mm. For a couple of days before it was .45ACP on my hip. Today might be .38+p or .357 Magnum.

I like variety and enjoy regular practice with lots of guns.

When grouse hunting, it's my model 63 kit gun.
When big game hunting, it's my model 43 kit gun.
When out in the mountains hiking, fishing, mushrooming, it's my 629-2 mtn revolver.

My preferred caliber depends on whether I am carrying a revolver or a semi-auto. If I am carrying a revolver (out-of-state day trip) it would be 38 Special in my 686+ or 44 Special in a 629, both being 3". If I am carrying a semi-auto (extended length trips), it would be 9mm (P365) followed by 45 ACP (Ruger SR1911CMD). Once my Glock 23.5 comes in, the 40 S&W could displace the 45 ACP, only because I would rather have a reliable lesser expensive handgun seized if I had to use it than some of my more expensive ones.

Note: in my state, carrying loaded magazines is considered a felony, so every magazine has to be unloaded, especially since magazines are part of the firearm. Meanwhile, since speedstrips and speedloaders are NOT part of a revolver, they can remain loaded!

Something in .45 ACP, a Colt 1911, a 625 or most often a Shield .45 for concealed carry. A 642-1 .38 for pocket carry when necessary.

.38+P daily, 9mm occasionally and .45 ACP when I am feeling nervous.

Like many, I would say my favorite would be 44 spl. But, what I carry is 38 special. As many things; it comes down to what you can easily carry depending on age and body type, and of course, what you shoot well. Where does age come in? Well, I got rid of my 380 acp as I could not longer rack the slide of the little thing. So, I went to a 642 and have never looked back.
