Favorite handgun caliber for carry?

LOL, my new " hole puncher" , Colt N.M. Mid Range got laughs at the range, guys said" look at the perfectly round holes". Just about everybody was blasting away with defense ammo.

The two handguns I carry the most are my old cut down 1917 in .45ACP or AR and my Lew Horton 24-3 .44 special. It wouldn't break my heart to hand either one over to the authorities after a shooting. Wellllll, I might rethink that with the Lew Horton...I like that thing.

38Spl +p

+P 125 grain is about what I can handle for 5 rapid fire.
It's the most powerful i'm confident with in my preferred carry.
That'd be a alloy J frame

Caliber is determined by the gun I choose.
9x19, could be in the P226, CZ 75, 92FS, 915 or DP 51 (the Daewoo is the smallest of that bunch and a fine shooter, but I've open-carried the others after bad storms when the power is out).

9x18 Mak, I have a CZ 82 that's a nice little package, and a good shooter. Often with me in my car. And a P64 that's small enough to stick in my pocket.

45 acp, when the urge for a 1911 grabs me.

32 acp, I have that Beretta 81 with 12 in the mag, it's a fine shooter. Also have a little FEG PA in that caliber, my version of the Walther PP if I want to be all smooth and Bondlike with a shoulder holster.

I carry either .45 acp in my Shield 45, or .357 SIG in may M&P 40c conversion. I chose these after a conversation I had with a retired homicide detective from the Dallas Police Department. His job involved investigating officer involved shootings. When he interviewed the officers, he would ask them how the bad guys reacted when they were hit. A hit from a .45 acp or from either .357 round (SIG or Magnum) caused considerably more disruption of a bad guy's behavior than did a hit from a 9mm round. Thus my choice was based on these real-world findings, not internet caliber debates. However, I would never criticize anyone for making a different caliber choice. It's better to carry any caliber than none at all.
