Babylon 5 was a great series because unlike most television shows, it was written with a 5-year story arc in mind. It actually had a planned ending and was not just strung out as long as the gravy train would last. J. Michael Straczynski wrote most of the episodes and included tidbits in early seasons that would show up years later, and then make sense. It took a dedicated viewer but now that it's on DVD it can be enjoyed at a person's leisure.
Unfortunately the idiot networks made it uncertain as to whether there would even be a 5th season, so JMS had to compress events in season 4 a lot. Consequently season 5 is a little disjointed, but still good stuff.
