Ok my gun of the month is my new S&W model 58 in 41mag, 4" barrel in nickel finish. I picked it up today and i love this gun. Its my new carry gun(CCW). After i purchased it i browsed the gun case for next months purchase. I found a S&W model 57 in 41mag snubbie in nickel finish too. (march) These are all marked $699. I can't pass these up its a window of oppertunity since i have the mad money right now. Its fate to have the $$ and see this deal at the sametime. Its funny how things work sometimes. These do list for over $1,000.

I also seen a really nice S&W revolver in 500S&W i think its got a 6 1/2" barrel and its ported in stainless. Do we have any 500S&W owners here?? Hows the recoil?? Bill

I made up my mind if its going to be the S&W's it has to be the "N" frames were i can get them in the calibers i wanted. I like the fit and feel of the heavier frames. Bill

BTW; The S&W snubnose in 41mag is haunting me right now to go and get it. Just kidding but i can wait till next month which is a few weeks away i guess. Its in nickel finish too. I think some in nickel and some in blue or stainless is ok too.

My new puter won't run the kodak program were trying to fix it then we can all get motivated together with pics. Bill

BigBill, congratulations on the acquisition of your model 58.
I am not aware of any model 57s having any less than a 4" barrel.
I would be curious to hear the particulars of this gun.
The model 657 was built with a round butt and a 3" barrel but the 57 was not.

The serial number would be a good start to date the year of production.

Remember; A gun is not a toy.

Glad to hear about feburary's new toy. With me its all been a question of when I have the $$$ nothing seems to grab at me. However when low on cash there always seems to be a "gotta have it". Enjoy, Frank

I'm surprised that my dealer has so many of the S&W's in 41mag. He told me its the first time in two years that he has the 41mag ammo too. With the snubbie in 41mag i'm not sure what model it is yet. I wonder how the 41mg snubbie shoots and how is it on the recoil with the shorter barrel and if its controllable or not? Its either the 41 snubbie or the m57 with the 4" barrel in nickel next. I'll post both serial numbers soon. Bill

Congratulations. I have two nickel Model 57s and I would just about kill for a factory nickel Model 58.

...boomer.....I can oblige you with a photo of a nickle 58, but they seem like hens teeth, I have only seen 2 in person and I bought one of 'em.

Bill, I shoot my 41 mag snubbies with no problems at all. Definitely get those photos up and be sure to post some over on the 'Unofficial 58 Club' as well. The 41 is a reloader's caliber, but I have been seeing more and more factory ammo popping up on the shelves of the LGS (not Wally World). Your dealer must have good taste if he has more than one 41 on the shelf, heck I'd shop there ;)

What end of the world are you in? If you're in my neck of the woods, I would be happy to let you test drive a 41 snubbie :D

here she is...a model 657 (not a 57 however)

Here are my serial numbers;

S&W model 57, 41mag, w/6" barrel in nickel finish
#CNS-5996x 57-6

S&W model 58, 41mag w/4" barrel in nickel finish
#CNL-408x 58-1

So what year are they? These are brand new in the blue plastic cases.
The pic of the snubbie looks great and so does the m58 too. They do offer the 41mag snubbie in the 657 with the 2 5/8" barrel and the pic is a m57 snubbie in nickel finish right? I think my dealer may have both. On my wish list or gotta have list is the S&W m29 6" in dirty harry blue and a m29 8 3/8" in nickel. If my mad money holds out. I have a short window to get a few before i start remolding two bathrooms for the misses. I may have to slow down for a while, maybe. I have to keep the misses happy too. Bill

BTW; I just put a set of pachmayer presentation grips on my m57 and put the larger m57 grips on my m58 for now. I'm looking for some really fancy wood grips now. The rosewood looks about the best grain/color wise on the grips. I had some brazilian rose wood paneling once that was breath taking awesome. I never seen wood look so good as the rosewood.

Bill,
Both of those revolvers are pretty new. So new the serial numbers don't show up in the new Standard Catalog (Copyright 2006).
The 3" snubby in the picture is a stainless M657. I'm pretty sure there were no M57s with barrels shorter than 4". I have a 4" M57 that's about 40 years old and really like it. The .41 Magnum has a loyal following.

I'm in the northeast and thanks for the offer of the test drive on the snubbie. My list is growing now i like the 41mag snubbie and the 44 snubbie too.

My wish/gotta have list;

1. S&W 41mag 657 snubbie 2 5/8" barrel in stainless
1a. S&W 41mag 57 8 3/8" barrel in nickel if they make it.
2. S&W 44mag 29 6 1/2" barrel in blue (Dirty Harry's Blue)
3. S&W 44mag 29 8 3/8" barrel in nickel
4. S&W 357mag 27 6" barrel in nickel or blue
5. S&W 44mag 629 3" barrel in stainless if available

If my mad money holds out but with the threat of rising taxes plus the higher cost of food/gas now who knows what can happen. You know when the cost of our living expenses goes up across the board were headed to another recession and we really haven't got out of the first one yet or recovered. The garden just got bigger this year. Bill
