Thinking about getting new computers for us during the Christmas sales period...are there any viable alternatives to Microsoft/MSN ...and their products... or do Apple and any other competitor have serious drawbacks that might make it a major headache to own them?

We've never had anything but Microsoft driven/Windows computers...it just bites my posterior to do business with a company who has the goal of ending the private ownership of firearms or at least restricting firearms here in the USA as much as Australia's laws have done to their citizens...

Or does their competition have the same anti-gun stances.... Yahoo is very anti-gun and slants their web site news just as much as MSN's and surprisingly... FOX news was pretty much anti-gun during the entire San Bernadino tragedy... they kept harping on why anyone was allowed to own that much ammo.... and how easy the terrorists bought guns...

You could always replace the Microsoft Windows operating system on your computer with Linux, Haiku, ReactOS, or any of a dozen or so other alternative non-Microsoft operating systems.

Everyone should own both, and determine for themselves the relative merits of each for themselves. No two users are alike and until you buy a fruity computer, you'll never know how you like it.

A year ago I bought my first Apple computer a 27 inch I-Mac. I the migrated my files from my Dell to the I-Mac. It took a bit to get use to how Apple does things, something are pretty similar and some a bit different but it still was a simple thing to make the switch.

Now to the good part. I turned on my I-Mac and it just runs. I haven't had a single crash or freeze-up; not one. It just runs and runs smooth and fast. Some people told me I did't need virus protection but I added a free anti virus program by Avira. It has found a few suspicious files in emails but I could count them on my fingers.

Yeah, I'm now a very happy and sold Apple user.

Satisfied Windows user for 20 years.
Tried a Mac in 2010. Got Apple everything now...

The wife found Apple much more intuitive for her. For me... eh... I never had much problems with Windows. The biggest advantage I found with Apple is how all their devices seamlessly work together. Once I got an idea of how easy that made things I was hooked. Competition wasn't even in the ballgame. The competition has gotten better and Windows 10 might be the answer for compatibility among all devices. Staying with Apple for the foreseeable future.

Now if I was miffed at Redmond for their anti-gun antics (and for good reason!) and was thinking about switching just one device like a desktop, I probably wouldn't. But if buying an iMac, iPad, iPhone and AppleTV was on your mind I think it would be worthy of consideration, particularly if music and other media is important.

I've spent my life in the computer business going back to before there was a "PC". After the majority of those years running DOS then Windows I got my first iPhone, the gateway drug to Apple.
Got a MacBook Pro in 2011 and never looked back. It's without a doubt the finest machine and OS I have ever worked with. My humble opinion, your mileage may vary.
Virus, Adware or Malware have never been a problem. Upgrades to the OS are seamless, quick and trouble free. I hit the power button and am ready to work in seconds.

This Thanksgiving holidays I've said good bye to my last windows based computer. Now only OSX & Linux in the household. I don't play games, so I'm not losing anything; in fact I don't have to worry about viruses anymore :D I know OSX can still be vulnerable but compared to windows machine it's bulletproof :)

True.

A friend's son got a Lenovo earlier this year. Is was so loaded with adware out of the box that it was near impossible to use. Of course those ads reduced the cost of the product... but geeeez... what a mess.

Just one option, but you could build a pretty decent PC for about what you'd pay for a retail box and install the OS of your choice on it.

Also, I've been building Windoze systems for almost 15 years now and haven't experienced any system stability issues since XP. Even 98SE wasn't -that- bad after I performed some system tweaks.

This push towards "touchscreen everything" really needs to stop, though... I don't want my desktop PC to look and act like my smartphone/tablet/phablet, kthx.

Also, you install an AV suite and avoid dodgy websites or suspicious downloads if you want protection from computer viruses. No OS is "immune" from attack, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a fanboy. ;)

Speaking of touch screens, nothing burns me up more than a filthy screen full of fingerprints, no thanks on the touch screen for me.

My main machine was just upgraded to Windows 10, which so far hasn't been a disaster.

My laptop has Ubuntu 14.04 on it. For what little I do with it these days, that's just fine. It hasn't been on in a couple of months.

I run a Linux web and file server, with my WordPress site on it, which is currently down when I had to rebuild the server.

Been using Macs since the 80s, as my wife taught art and my kids were into computer graphics (one is still designing games for a living). We've had Windows machines, too, but the crashes and endless pop-ups drove me crazy. I think it was either Steve Jobs or current CEO Tim Cook who said that with Windows machines, you are the product (delivered to advertisers), whereas with Apple, the machine is the product. I also like the fact that their iPhone cannot be easily snooped by the NSA types (although mine would be pretty boring - "don't forget to pick up dog food", etc.).

I'll try this again. I've always owned microsoft stuff. Used it at work so much I couldn't see learning two different operating systems. I drive a GM vehicle too. I know, I'm just helping the bad guys win. I'm thinking about buying a new alarm system made in China. If it isn't made offshore it's probably owned by someone who lives offshore or at least someone who keeps their money there.

Next year I plan to make a move to Lenox on my IBM type computer if I can figure out that operating system. If not I plan to switch to an Apple Mac. I too am tired of the problems running Windows.
