Federal Automatch 22 LR Question

Pistols and revolvers are a lot different than rifles.
As a youngster in the 60 we had a Savage auto that did not work but it made a great single shot, but hard to load.
The trigger group got wiped down every year but no brush down the bore, since it was "Seasoned"!!

I cleaned my revolvers and found out that what worked in the rifles
did not always do the same in the shorter barrels.
Federal did not do well for me but my weapons liked Winchester and even Remington ammo, but there were duds now and then.

Today the "no lead" primer mix has improved but I don't know about the new ammo they are trying to come out with, that is water soluble?

You might try the 40gr Sub-Sonic and then the High-Vel ammo
to see if the groups are any good at 25 yards.
50 yards off hand with a stock pistol is getting food on the table, the hard way.

Good luck.

"CCI Standard Velocity is not premium ammo, but it probably costs a penny or two more per round than the real cheap stuff. It's all I buy anymore. Even though it's standard velocity, it functions well in all my semi-auto pistols (and my two semi-auto rifles). Lot-to-lot consistency is not on the same level as the every expensive target stuff, but it's pretty good. In many years of using CCI SV, I've had one cartridge that didn't fire on the first attempt, and that was a couple of months ago. Accuracy is usually decent in a variety of guns."

I'll have to agree with that. Several years ago I bought a like-new ca. 1955 Ruger Standard Model. It seemed to be a little finicky regarding ammunition, and didn't particularly like either the Remington or Federal bulk pack stuff as it would often have a malfunction or two out of every magazine full. It performed better with some older (1970s) Remington .22 LR in 50 round boxes, and some similarly old Winchester .22 LR - but not perfect either. About a month ago I put three boxes of CCI SV through it, without a single bobble. At the last gun show I bought two 500 round cartons of it for $35 each, not a bad price for what seems to be 100% functional reliability.

Here's an even better deal on CCI. I just ordered a bunch the other week for $13.99 and today I see it's $11.99. Looks like I have to find some more cabinet space for another 6000 rounds:D

I've shot a fair amount of Automatch in my K22. It didn't strike me as particularly dirty, and it was adequately accurate for handgun use. That said, I spent a fair amount of time with a Ruger American Rimfire .22 rifle shooting groups this summer. It was not impressive at all. Mini mags and Blazers shot consistently tighter. As did most others. This stuff was consistently the worst grouping ammo in a session. And that surprised me, as I have always regarded Federal very highly.

This Federal Automatch ammo is good ammo and not overly expensive. At 1200 fps (rated out of a Rifle of course) it is not as hot as most .22LR Hi-velocity ammo is but higher than standard velocity is. I believe it was specifically meant for Semi Auto Rifles (for reliability) and works fine in S&W revolvers. Just off the cuff, I would think that standard velocity ammo (1050 - 1080 fps) would expand the cases less and be easier to eject from the cylinder. Try CCI standard velocity (1050 fps).

PS: look into having your Chambers reamed - S&W .22 Revolvers are famous for tight Chambers! There are many discussions here on the Forum regarding this issue.
