Fell for a GP100

I have the 4" and 5" GP100.

I did change out the grips and front sights.

Next will be a Wilson Combat hammer and trigger spring kit for both.

Congrats Peakes!

I bought a 5" last month and couldn't be happier with it.
It shot well right out of the box, but I still installed a Wolff spring kit. That made it even better! Getting 3# SA and 7.5# DA. (Best $8 I have spent for a while.)

This is my .38 GP100 that was one of the Davidson's batch, awesome action, bone stock springs. I never even broke it down, just oiled it.

The Altamont Super Rosewood inserts were only about $14 IIRC, and I believe Midway sells the Lett Large rubber bodies for less than $10 a piece if you can ever catch them in stock. Altamont also makes the Large grip bodies but I didn't want the snakeskin or checkered backstraps......I just wanted "standard". The whole grip package from Altamont isn't that expensive, no more than $30. Ditch the hideous Hogues and put the Lett style on, no big deal.

IMO the Lett style wood inserts aren't much good for a"usin' gun", the wood inserts are easily marked up and can crack with sharp impact. Only my range queens wear Letts, and the price for original Lett compacts with original inserts is almost surpassing S&W Coke targets it seems:) Pachmayr Grippers and the recently discontinued (why Pachmayr???) Pachmayr Compacs are excellent choices for GP's that actually get carried a lot. Barring that, Badger makes awesome but expensive full size and compact wood grips for the GP.

Semi-autos ? S&W all day. Revolvers ? Own SP101, GP100, 686, 642, like them all. I do, however feel my 1976 vintage Model 28-2 is the best of my revolvers :)

I fell for it's little brother, the SP-101. That's it on the right in both pics. :) Ruger makes some great revolvers eh?

I bought some cargo pants with a larger waist so I can comfortably IWB carry my 4" GP100's in a good thumb break holster.

Carrying small is convenient but today I was in a remote area with my Beretta .25 and wished I had something with punch......like my 4" GP100......

I've been looking at GP-100s as well as my first .357 magnum. Thinking about a 6" stainless. Thoughts?

Vegetaman: 6" barrels are nice if you are hunting or really reaching out, but I find that the 4" inch models have better balance and the accuracy doesn't seem to fall off (velocity does though). Of all the models though I like the 3" the best -- I just like fixed sight guns and it looks super. All that said, if you like the 6" get it -- you can't go wrong.

Ashlander -- Well, mostly planning to use it as a range gun, so have been torn between the 4" and the 6".

As a range gun, the 6" is great. It also might be legal length for sporting uses, but that length works against carry. The 4" just makes a great length for all around use.
