Finally... 16-4 4” - Patience is a virtue!

OK, now that this discussion has reopened, I want to add another question to the mix. Suppose one had one of these K frame revolvers in 32 something. Would it make sense to have it retrofitted with a second cylinder assembly chambered in 32-20?

Almost from the get go I've had this in mind for Project 616, and if I were at least 10-15 years younger it would probably be done already, but at 72, I don't know how many long projects I want to wait on or can justify.

Just something for discussion since we've already established the desirability of having a revolver with as long a straight side 32 chamber as available/possible.

The .32-20 thought has crossed my mind Froggie and I had a cylinder for the conversion but sold it. Shouldnt take very long for a competent smith.
Ammo has been my reservation for not doing it.

Would a 1905 32-20 cylinder work in it? At the Seattle gun show this weekend I ran across a vendor that had boxes of parts for S&W guns. I got 4 moonclips for my 1917 and in the same box were cylinders and other stuff. I am certain if my mind was working I should of looked at what other revolver boxes he had, plus to add to my stupidity I did not get his contact information.

I've always wanted a 16-4 to go with my 17-6 and my 586-1

I never saw one for sale here in Switzerland. And I wouldn't know where to buy ammo for it, not a common round here.

Two quick comments… first, you can shoot that Model 16-4 all day long with the commonly available 32 S&W Long ammo sold in Europe for target guns, and second, even the simplest reloading set up will enable you to shoot whichever length 32s you can find virtually forever. That brass just doesn't seem to wear out. Of course I don't know about the market there in Switzerland, but here in the US (in "normal" times) reloading makes a lot of sense.

As you said, they don't show up there (or here) all that often, but IMHO at least, they're worth the search. Just as you've probably concluded with your K22/Model 17-6, the K frame provides a great platform for target loads, but the 32 H&R can also be loaded up to pretty warm levels as well.

Good luck with your search!

I've also got a 4" 16-4, I didn't realise they were rarer than 6"
Reading through all the above, I'm a bit surprised, my gun is a laser beam with 32h&r but it's all over the place with 32 long. I assumed that was down to the chambering. What brand of 32 long are people using? Or are they hand loads?

I've heard some other people say they had gotten similar results, but it's just a little unexpected to me. Think of how many 357 mags are shot using 38 Spl with perfect satisfaction. I've never done a serious test of the difference in relative accuracy between S&WL and H&R or even Fed Mag cartridges in the same cylinders of guns with longer chambers… but shoot a lot of S&WLs in my custom 327 K frame and Blackhawk 327 without noticing a large loss of accuracy. Most of what I shoot is reloads using cast lead bullets.

I'll try loading up some and see what they do. As I can get 32l easier than h&r brass. Factory wise I have only tried 100 rounds of magtech, that's what was poor

Go ahead with the additional cylinder. If you want, I can run interference with Andy for you. With one provision, you arrange for it to be sold to me when you are done with it!

Kevin, you know what Charlton Heston said about "cold, dead hands" don't you? I don't think I'll be finished with it before that time and even then some family members will probably be fighting over it. "Nature of the beast."
