I've been looking for a 4" blued Model 29-2 for awhile...more for a shooter than a collector's piece. Yesterday was a typical Central Florida thunderboomer day so I figured it would be a good excuse to visit a local gun show, and just maybe I'd get lucky this time. Sure enough, about halfway through the show I spotted a nice 4" Model 29 in one of the cases. It was a blued -2, P&R of course, 1977 vintage, sporting a set of Pachmayrs, but no box or goodies. Mechanically in very good condition, but it looked like the old girl had been sitting unattended in a holster in a closet for awhile- some light surface rust spots on the cylinder. Still, I saw a lot of potential in her, and I was out the door for well under $500. I got home, removed the Pachs, gave her a thorough cleaning, and started on her with Flitz polish and Renaissance Wax. She turned out very nice...rich deep blue finish, crisp lettering, and nice case hardened hammer and trigger. Probably 90%+. I fitted her with a spare set of target stocks, and voila! Now I can't wait to get her to the range and go through a box. I know, I know...where are the pictures? I'll try to get some posted tomorrow.

Yeah, where are the picture's? Sound's like you done good! If you have never fired a four inch 29 with full house 240gr ammo you are in for a treat.

I got the full power load experience with my 4" M/29-2 recently. As I was wrapping up my most recent range trip, I put a couple of loads that I had developed for my Ruger 77/44 in the S&W. When I squeezed them off it felt as if I had ahold of a handful of barbed wire, the checkered grips really bit into my palm. I don't shoot hot loads in my 29's anymore, I cut my teeth on .44 Magnums during the Dirty Harry era ans shot my share of full house loads back then. Nowadays I shoot .44 Special power loads in my 29's occassionally kicking it up to moderate magnum loads.

Thanks for the support and kind words. I have a 6" Model 29 that's a blast to shoot (pardon the pun!), and I'd still like to get a 6-1/2" sometime soon. I was actually looking for a 6-1/2" when I stumbled on the 6", but I got such a good deal on the 6" that I couldn't pass it up. I know that they're more rare, but they don't fetch the prices that the 6-1/2s do. I have seen some blued 6-1/2"s in VG condition for around $600-625, but I've got to build my gun fund back up. I'll be shooting the 4" later this week.
Nicely done. Please tell me you didn't scoop that up at the Kissimmee show. I could have sworn Dick (Dimonback) and I scoped out any "gems". It was hard to pass up the 27-2 for $1200, though. (!)Joe

Sorry pharmer, but it was the Kissimmee show- about noon on Sunday (during the rainstorms). I also saw a really nice nickel 4" Model 29, but it was outta my price range...like the 27-2. I figured that I couldn't go wrong with a M-29 under $500.
