Welcome to the S&W Forums and what an entrance you have made. Very nice, early production Model 639 you have there! Last time I saw one it was not in that nice of a condition and the seller was asking way more than it was worth and was unwilling to negotiate.

Welcome to the Forum! Congrats on finding that early 639. I also have an early 639 and it has always been one of my favorite carry guns. I tend to favor the 2nd generation autos. I have a 639, 659, and 645. Currently on the hunt for a decent 669. They are addictive.
Thanks! It was barely used, and my local dealer picked it up as part of an estate.
Congratulations, that 639 will end up leading to a 659, then a 52-2, the 952, and the forementioned 945, if not all sub-variations!
Thanks for the welcome! I own a few S&W's, but this is the only kinda special one in my eyes. A great gun that can lay fame to starting the 9mm auto craze, yet sadly it was overlooked for the models that followed it.
Ha! Well, I have been known to over do things when I find a gun I like…
Yeah, my addiction started with a 639 as well!

Welcome to the forum and an excellent find. The M639 is much underrated IMHO.
Yes, welcome to the forum. That 639 looks to be in excellent condition, and I love the looks and feel of them. I had one just like it and wish I had kept it.

A buddy here sold me my first Smith auto , a 639 . I thought it was the greatest auto I ever shot , but then I started buying .
Warning ! I see you want a 945 . That's how I started with PC's , with a 945-1 . I now have more than a few PC's , all semi autos . I hope you either have an understanding other half , or deep pockets , hopefully both . Because you d*** sure aren't going to stop at just one , just ask around here .

I will do my best to avoid the "PC Curse", but if I've gotta have it, well, I'll find a way. Honestly though, they do do really nice work. Too bad everything from the factory doesn't come this way.

When I decided I "needed" a S&W 9mm, I was drawn to the Model 639 as being the best model to suit my planned uses. Mine is a later version and came with the non adjustable rear sight and the finger hook trigger guard. I quickly turned it into a sort of shootable Erector Set by adding a couple of interchangeable slides, etc. I refer to it as my "Franken-Smith" and enjoy it all the more for its adaptability.
The gun that started the 9mm movement for S&W was the Model 39 which had an aluminum alloy frame, but I wanted steel, so the stainless 639 checked that box for me as well. I've placed "before and after" pics of my 639 project below.

Original 2 and 3-digit 39-series are some of the sexiest looking autos ever made, IMO. Nice score.

What are these "flush fit 2nd gen adj sights" of which you speak? The only factory adjustable sights I've seen have tail fins like a '57 Chevy! I've been able to obtain a NOS adjustable sight from Millett, but it's about as bulky as the old Bomars. The most compact adjustable sight in the 39/59 series was the optional original "lollypop" style on the 39s and 59s. I have one of those on a 39-2, but it would take a bunch of machining to put one on a later model.
