Finally My Grail Gun * S&W 646 *

The 646 is very unique and cool. Does anyone know if all (300?) of the non Performance Center 646's where shipped in the aluminum Performance Center case?

They were shipped with Smith & Wesson Aluminium case without the PC emblem. Like this one.

"Bullet Bob can you confirm the non PC case I'm showing in the pic, as what your received with yours? I had ordered one, but returned it because it was poor quality (made in China)."

You have no idea what you're asking - you'll have to come over to dig it out.

I'm assuming I was wrong about it being a PC case based on the other posts; all I really remembered was that it came in an aluminium case. I'm so dense I didn't even know they made a non-PC metal case.

Light hits!

If your light primer strikes persist, don't rush out to buy a new main spring strain screw. Take a "SPENT" primer, remove the anvil, leaving you with just the cup! Put the cup over the end of the strain screw and tighten!

Pretty creative solution, thanks for sharing that!

I already put locktite on the strain screw, and replaced the firing pin with a Cylinder & Slide extended pin (easy 15 minute change). Yesterday I put 180 rounds through it, no light primer strikes. I pulled the grips off and noticed the strain screw remained tightened down. Yay!!!:D

I'll put another approximately 200 through it Monday or Tuesday, just for the fun of it!:)

I just saw one advertised at "the firing line" (Colorado), for $1375, with the "original paper box" (lol), and two sets, of grips.

Well, I don't know if my advertising this 646 precipitated it's sale, but it sold shortly afterwards. Of course these guns become ghost, when offered for sale, lol!:D

I passed because I was so happy with my Performance Center, my mental justification was it did not have orignal grips, it did not have the aluminum case, etc., etc. Plus greed is a horrible thing (unless it involves buying guns:D)!

Non Performance Center 646

Well today, I went to unbox (at my FFL) my new non PC 646, that I bought sight unseen:eek: on line. When I asked the kid, how the gun looks, he simply said, "Dirty but it looks ok!" Good enough for me!:D

Non PC 646

Well, this gun is/was dirty, but otherwise very nice. It came with (I'm guessing, puzzled by the size) the original case, orignal grips, and an expended round. How sweet is that? I couldn't figure out the grips (no screw hole), but google told me it comes with a grip removal tool (ah!), which I'll have to order.

I am super stoked about this 646, it is beautiful and will be even more so when I get her out of jail. This is kind of too crazy and great for a forty fanatic like me.

First I thought I would never be able to get the PC version, then surprisingly a deal popped for my 631 (and non PC 646) requiring giving up my non PC. I never expected to own both, but now I do, and I got the complete package (pretty much), on the non PC. How sweet is that? Very!:D

Enough with my fawning, slobbering, ecstasy! Here's some photos, and a few observations. Notice the rubber "cokes"!:D

Case - 646 - Shell casing

Trigger double action, is no where near the PC version, but that is an easy fix. Target style hammer spur (though I don't ever shoot SA), is much nicer on non PC. Got some free dog hairs under the foam, left by the previous owner. Seems like a golden lab;)

Quick inspection & light clean

Bore looks great as did cylinder. Clearance .004 on forcing cone to cylinder (excellent, better than my PC version at .007). Metal looks great!

Did a light going over with Flitz and a few strokes of the chambers with nylon brushes.

Compare the 2 Versions of the 646 Revolver

Here's a side by side of my two lovely 646's!:D

Well that's it for now! Any input is appreciated, especially about the case being that small. The case I had previously purchase (and returned) from S&W, for my previous non PC 646 was large like in my above previous posting.

Also, I didn't realize the Hogue grips, were designed as such, the one's I had purchase from Numrich were not quite the same at the butt of the gun. These stock Hogues are very cool, almost boot grip style. Very nice!

Wow, I'll have to mull that one over. Might consider a gunsmith to install it. Thanks for the tip!

You might consider a brass or gold bead sight, which should drop right in with no extra work involved. I put one on my 629-3 and am happy with the improvement over standard ramp with orange insert.
