Finally shot my 4506...this thing is a laser...

In regards to your nite sights, if they are Trijicon's send the slide to Trijicon and they will re-lamp them for $54.00 and extend your warranty for another 13 years. I did that with two 4006's that were PD trade in's. Much cheaper than buying new sights! They are also very speedy in doing so. Both of mine were done in about a week including shipping both ways.

Really? Wow, I will have to take a look. I hate 3 dots but for 54.00 I could possibly live with them.

My 20 year old 4506 is one of the very few 45's I've owned that straight out of the box would feed anything and everything. It's never had a FTF, stovepipe, FTE or any other malfunction.

I keep it stoked with CorBon 200 gr HPs which feed like hardball. No finer pistol was ever made by S&W and-it's all steel!

I have this same pistol - an early 4506 with the hooked trigger guard - and it's my favorite 45! I much prefer it to a 1911. Eats everything I feed it. I have several thousand rounds through mine without a single malfunction of any kind. I hale a little trigger work in this gun (not a pull weight adjustment, just smooth with a crisp SA break) and it's easily the best SA/DA trigger I've ever used and better than many worked SA triggers.

In case it wasn't clear - I like my 4506. :D

Good luck with your new gun. I find that I like my 4506-1 better than my Sig 220 Elite.

I am the same. I don't own a 220 elite, but I did own a 220 W. German model that was tragically stolen by a troubled family member and pawned off somewhere.:(

But, I like the 4506 better than I liked it and like it better than my other current .45, the Glock 21(probably not popular around these parts...).

I want to put night sites on mine.

In case it wasn't clear - I like my 4506.

I can't imagine why.:) One thing about the 4506-IF it ever failed to fire, you can always render blunt force trauma with it. Try that with an alloy frame.

The 4506 pistols get a bad rap because of heavy weight but
if you put one on a scale you will find it weighs within one
ounce of a full size 1911 Govt model. That is not to say
a 1911 is small or light, you just have to remember the
4506 is an Offensive weapon and not designed to be a concealable
disappear conceal carry type.

I love my 4506 and I just put heavier springs for 45 super cant wait!

I see you are new to this thread. What specific spring did you use
and where did you get it ? Are you loading your own 45 Super
or buying from Buffalo Bore ? There are no other sources are
there ? If you are loading your own, where did you find the
recipes ?

Mine is Houston PD. Great shooting gun. My first 45.

Man, the more I shoot it, the more I love it. This thing is a laser. Shoots lights out with cheapo WWB and Fed. 230 ball. And this with blacked out faded night sights. I was also shooting my P220 and M&P and while the M&P is a close second, my beloved 220 is left flailing in comparison. Probably not totally fair as the 4506 has to have some trigger work and I have the Apex kit in the M&P while the 220 trigger is stock. Part of the issue is I hold as high as possible and that means my thumb drags on the slide stop and or decocker on the 220 where as I have no issues with my other two. Just cannot seem to find a comfortable hold on the 220 now that I have experience with my other pistols. The thought of selling the 220 for a M&P 45 has crossed my mind......... more than once:D

I would like to add one thing to this thread about the 4506 that has not been mentioned to this point. It is a very 'soft' shooting 45. I have had far more experience with Colt 1911's than my early square trigger guard model 4506, so when I began shooting the 4506, I immediately noticed the softer recoil, at least compared to the 1911 (I have no experience with the Sig 220 in this regard). It seems to shoot with a push rather than an abrupt sharp recoil. I attribute this to the frame design and overall size of the 4506. Regardless, it is apparent to me that the Smith is every bit as accurate, more reliable, and softer shooting that any of my Government model Colts. That being said, I enjoy shooting my Colts more than my 4506. They carry better, are single action only, and nothing......repeat nothing.......feels like a Government model in the hand. JMHO.

It is an easy shooter for sure. I think the weight and grip angle make it much more enjoyable and accurate to shoot than my P220. I had a Kimber 1911 and this is as close to a 1911 that one can get.

I let my P220 go when the 4506 came into the picture. Tried as I may I never could bond with the P220. It felt right in the hand and seemed to point naturally but I just could not shoot well with it. The 4506, by contrast, has been a tack driver in my hands from the first round.

I had a Sig 220R; a fine pistol in every way. But I ended up keeping a 4506 as my TDA 45ACP.

Among other reasons, I never could quite get over Sig putting the slide release where the "frame safety" should be.
