Firing pins keep breaking on my S&W AR15-22's

Just passed 15,000 rounds thru mine with zero issues....
putting a order in for a new firing
pin just in case, never thought of it breaking because I've had literally no issues at all with this rifle

I am curious to know if any of us experiencing broken firing pins are running aftermarket triggers? I'm running a Rock River Varmint.

Nope. Over 15k with a single stage Jard and no problems. I suspect all these broken firing pins are the result of improper cleaning or other user issue.

Are other people having these issues???

Thanks in advance.

smith & wesson parts broken 2 in 9000 rounds
you use original trigger group ?

I've got a semi 22 made in 1954 by an American company named similar to a fish. I have personally put 20+k rounds through it over the 13 years I've owned it, and I'm quite sure my uncle put at least that many through it before I got it, and I'd be surprised if grandpa put any fewer through it himself. He was a prodigious marksman. I'm always impressed with it's performance and accuracy. Many a can of coke have met their maker at the hands of this varmint machine I tell you!

After reading this thread and many others, I'm quite assured that the MP15-22 rifle has issues that stem from lackluster materials and design, especially concerning the bolt/extractor and firing pin. I'm also convinced that it has developed a complete fandom in the few years it has been manufactured and on the market. There have to be plentiful reasons for that... I.E. 2/3 the initial cost of its bigger brother, and 1/10th the cost to feed(maybe less)? Hmmmm. Replacing parts due to breakage from use seems like adding to the fun...

I'd be surprised if a company as good as SW isn't already aware of the issues. I'm disappointed we haven't heard they already have fixes either in the works or ironed out for these issues. Honestly I'm really surprised though how often the same issues seem to crop up without word from S&W. How old is the S&W 15-22? Best I can tell it was introduced prior to 2010.

Do you own a 15-22?

Nope. I'm considering it. I'm in the "not sure" camp at the moment. I love the idea, not sure if I am sold on buying one for myself yet.

If not for the many problem reports here and other boards I'd probably already own one. Or two. One of these days I'll get one, in the mean time I'll continue to spend the money decking out my other options and see what SW has to say or do about it - when or if that day ever comes. If nothing changes I'll probably get one somewhere down the road and just replace parts as they break. Seems to be the M.O.

I am stocking up on 22 though...

You should never buy one if you are thinking there are are lot of problems based on the comments you see here.

Like I said, I'm considering it. And if I do, it will be because I want one despite the problems. Have I done something to offend you?

If I don't buy one, it will more than likely be because of the fact that two acquaintances have them, and have both had to send them back more than once for BCG related ftf/fte malfunctions. This thread and the comments made on it are only further evidence that there are issues with the weapon, despite raucous objections from many who don't want their guns insulted.

That being said, the fact that there are so many rabid supporters says something in and of itself. I can see the draw of the 15-22, and if I could find a used one for a reasonable price I'd buy it, throw in the various aftermarket fixes and be down the road, never looking back.

No, you are not offending me. I really don't care what your opinion is.

What I'm more concerned with is a person who really doesn't have a "horse in the game" piling on and characterizing those of us who haven't had any issues as "rabid." (I have more than 6000 rounds fired thru my 5 year old 15-22.) Lots of potential buyers come here and can get a distorted view of issues.

As of late you seem to have jumped in on the "15-22 has problems bandwagon" in this thread and the Appleseed thread. That's why I asked if you have one.

I stand by my statement:

You should never buy one if you are thinking there are are lot of problems based on the comments you see here.

If you look in this thread, there are about 4 or 5 reported cases of people who had problems with their firing pins breaking. In virtually all the cases, they broke with 10K plus rounds fired.... one appeared to be in the 100K range. S&W seems to have come up with a new firing pin. A picture of it was posted. That's a pretty small percentage of "problems" considering the hundreds of thousands of 15-22 in the field.

I based by comment on that.

I can't comment on your friend's problems. They may have been real issues, or maybe not.

I have seen many firearms returned to the manufacturers because of very liberal warranty policies and companies who desire to have happy customers whether or not the issue is real. In some cases the firearms just needed to be cleaned or the user had grip issues, etc. ... there were no broken parts.

Yeah i certainly do not appreciate being called 'rabid' for enjoying the use of a rifle which has given me NO problems whatsoever. The reason i enjoy this rifle so much is because it is problem free, easy to clean, customizable and extremely good fun!

For those that feel the 15-22 is a problem waiting to happen, do like Dionne Warwick and 'Walk on by' and quit badmouthing the rifle and it owners, the majority of which have had no issues with theirs.

S&W M&P 15-22 firing pins

Did some research searching for a upgrade to the mp15-22's firing pin and I came across this website that claims to make a stainless steel and a titanium replacement firing pin for This gun

At least a dozen shooters I know personally have purchased 15-22's in the past year. They have all (as have I) put on a red dot sight and gone shooting stiaight from the dealers rack.

One shooter I know went with the "popular alternative" semi .22. He installed a heavier barrel, new trigger group and much more ergonomic stock as well as his red dot sight. It cost him just as much as buying the 15-22.

Get one and enjoy your shooting.
